Jaeger-LeCoultre continues its celebration of Eastern cultural traditions with the Reverso Tribute Enamel Horse, the fourth piece in its exclusive Chinese Zodiac series. Limited to just 10 pieces worldwide, this exceptional creation merges fine watchmaking with the maison’s highest expressions of decorative craftsmanship. Presented in a pink gold case with a hand-finished black Grand Feu enamel dial, the timepiece conceals a miniature engraving of a leaping horse on its reverse, a masterful tableau requiring over 80 hours of hand-engraving. It is both a tribute to the Year of the Horse and a collector’s item that bridges art, culture, and horology.
Crafted from 18-carat pink gold, the case of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Enamel Horse measures 27.4 mm in width and 45.6 mm in length from lug-to-lug, with a slim 9.73 mm profile. The iconic rectangular Reverso case showcases a mix of polished surfaces and sculptural Art Deco lines, harmonizing with the enamel dial’s minimalistic aesthetic. A deep black Grand Feu enamel fills the entire reverse side of the rotating case, providing a rich canvas for the hand-engraved equestrian artwork.
Turning the case over reveals a breathtaking micro-sculpture: a galloping horse rendered in remarkable detail, leaping through sandblasted golden clouds. The backdrop is the same high-gloss black Grand Feu enamel used on the dial, offering a dramatic contrast to the bright polished volumes of the horse.
Executed directly over the enamel surface using 10 specialized chisels and over 80 hours of hand engraving, the caseback is a testament to the Maison’s Métiers Rares craftsmanship.
A push-button system enables the Reverso case to swivel effortlessly. The crown is positioned at 3 o’clock, offering smooth winding for the hand-wound caliber within. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet).
The front-facing dial of the Reverso Tribute Enamel Horse is a study in elegant restraint. Rendered in deep black Grand Feu enamel, its glossy surface reflects light with a glass-like sheen. This restrained canvas is accented only by applied pink gold hour markers, a subtle railroad minute track, and dauphine hands, as a refined nod to the Art Deco origins of the Reverso design. While it may appear simple at a glance, the dial is the product of an intricate process involving five to six successive layers of enamel, each fired individually at high temperatures. After cooling, the surface is hand-polished over the course of half a day to reveal a flawless, uniform brilliance. Achieving this depth of black, without bubbles, streaks, or tonal variation, requires both technical mastery and patience from the enameller.
Notably, the dial’s enamel tone is perfectly matched to the enamel background of the engraved caseback. Achieving this harmony across two surfaces, one flat and the other sculptural, is a challenge few maisons can meet. In this edition, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rares atelier succeeds with precision, highlighting the level of artisanal coordination involved in bringing the Tribute Enamel series to life.
