Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date revisits one of the manufacture’s most celebrated modern calibres in a far more expressive and architectural form. First introduced in 2006, the Calibre 978 became known for its chronometric performance and unusual jumping date display. This latest interpretation elevates the movement visually, placing its mechanisms at the center of the experience through openworked sections, enamel finishing, and refined hand decoration. Presented in a pink gold Grande Tradition case, the watch balances technical sophistication with traditional craftsmanship.

The case measures 42mm in diameter and 12.5mm in thickness. Crafted from 18k pink gold, it combines polished, brushed, and microblasted finishes that give the watch a rich sense of depth. The Grande Tradition profile feels elegant yet substantial, with curved surfaces and refined transitions enhancing the overall presence on the wrist.

Turning the watch over reveals a sapphire caseback showcasing the decorated movement and its large 22k pink gold rotor. The cutaway design of the rotor allows a clearer view of the calibre beneath, emphasizing the movement’s layered architecture and hand-finished details.

The crown is cleanly integrated into the case and maintains the watch’s symmetrical appearance. Sapphire crystals protect both sides of the watch, enhancing visibility while preserving the refined proportions of the case. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (165 feet).

The dial combines traditional decoration with contemporary openness. A deep-blue translucent enamel surface sits above a barleycorn guilloché pattern, creating richness and texture beneath the light. Several openworked sections interrupt the dial, revealing mechanical components underneath and giving the watch a more dynamic appearance.

At 6 o’clock, the large tourbillon aperture dominates the lower half of the dial. The jumping pointer-date display runs around the periphery, indicated by a gold hand tipped with a red JL anchor. At noon, the openworked 24-hour display doubles as a second time zone indicator. Additional cutaways at 9 and 2 o’clock reveal the calendar mechanism and structural elements of the movement.

The contrast between polished pink gold elements and the dark blue enamel creates strong visual depth. Applied hour markers and dauphine hands reflect light beautifully against the textured surface. Bridges above the tourbillon and 24-hour display add further dimensionality. Luminescent material is not used here, allowing the finishing and architecture to remain the focus.

Mounted on this watch is a black alligator leather strap, secured by an 18k pink gold folding buckle. The dark tone of the strap contrasts elegantly with the warm pink gold case and deep blue dial. On the wrist, the watch feels substantial yet refined, with the curved case profile helping it sit comfortably despite its complexity.
