IWC Schaffhausen brings one of its signature complications to the sportiest member of the Portugieser family with the new Portugieser Yacht Club Perpetual Calendar 42. More than four decades after Kurt Klaus developed his ingenious perpetual calendar mechanism, its arrival in the Yacht Club combines the complication’s mechanical sophistication with the more robust, nautical character that has distinguished this branch of the Portugieser collection since its modern revival in 2010.

The IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Perpetual Calendar 42 is housed in an 18k 5N Armor Gold case measuring 42.4mm in diameter and 14.1mm thick. IWC’s proprietary alloy features a modified microstructure designed to provide greater hardness and wear resistance than conventional 5N gold, making it particularly appropriate for the Yacht Club’s sportier character. Polished surfaces, integrated crown guards and the broad proportions of the case give the perpetual calendar a more substantial presence than its traditionally styled Portugieser counterparts.

Around the back, a sapphire crystal caseback provides a view of the in-house caliber 82651 and its Pellaton automatic winding system. The movement is decorated with circular graining, while a skeletonized rotor carries IWC’s gold-toned Probus Scafusia medallion. The transparent construction also reveals the contemporary implementation of the historic Pellaton system, which incorporates highly wear-resistant ceramic components at critical points while preserving the bidirectional winding principle developed by Albert Pellaton.

The screw-in crown is protected by integrated crown guards and serves as the central control for the perpetual calendar, allowing its synchronized indications to be adjusted through the crown rather than individual case correctors. A convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).

The obsidian black dial is constructed from multiple layers of translucent lacquer, creating a surface that can shift between glossy black and deep charcoal depending on the light. Its dark appearance contrasts with the warm Armor Gold case, while three recessed sub-dials organize the perpetual calendar without abandoning the balanced visual language associated with the Portugieser collection.

Solid gold applied Arabic numerals and hour markers surround the display, accompanied by gold-plated leaf-shaped hands and a central hacking seconds hand. The perpetual calendar places the date at 3 o’clock, the day of the week and leap-year indication at 9 o’clock, and the month alongside the moon-phase display at 6 o’clock. All calendar indications remain mechanically synchronized, meaning an adjustment through the crown advances the corresponding displays together.

The layered lacquer gives the obsidian dial considerable depth, particularly against the raised gold numerals, markers and recessed calendar displays. The moon-phase indication adds another visual layer at 6 o’clock while offering exceptional mechanical precision, requiring a correction of just one day after approximately 577.5 years. No luminous material is used, preserving the more elegant character of the traditional Portugieser dial despite the Yacht Club’s sportier construction.

The “IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Perpetual Calendar 42” (Ref#: IW344101) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 82651 with 46 jewels, 307 components, and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with IWC’s Pellaton automatic winding system with ceramic components, central hacking seconds and a perpetual calendar displaying the date, day, month, leap year and moon phase, with all calendar indications synchronized and adjustable through the crown. Power reserve can last up to 60 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted on this watch is an integrated black textured rubber strap, secured by an 18k 5N gold pin buckle. The rubber construction reinforces the Yacht Club’s more casual and nautical identity while providing a sharp contrast to the polished Armor Gold case and its warm-toned dial furniture. At 42.4mm in diameter and 14.1mm thick, the watch retains substantial wrist presence, but the integrated strap and robust construction make this perpetual calendar particularly suited to regular wear.
