When it comes to green in the watch industry, the word seems to be “go”. After watching the blue trends play out during the 2010's, now it seems green has entered the limelight. This recent IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar may not be a complete novelty, but the green option widens its appeal and set the stage to reintroduce itself. The round 42 mm case is made of stainless-steel with polished surfaces and brushed casebands with a width of 13,8 mm. While mounted to the case is a steel bezel with a near mirror-like polished finish. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It includes a steel oscillating weight adorned by the trademark IWC golden medallion. It comes equipped with a knurled setting crown embossed with IWC logo. An elegant design with short stubby lugs that provide a robust and efficient look. All topped by a convex shaped sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet).Time is exhibited on a dark green dial with a sunray finish and applied stainless-steel Arabic numerals, followed by the characteristic Portugieser white railroad motif minute scale, circling around the periphery of the dial. This green hue seems to be a new shade that IWC has premiered here and now added to their color palette. The perpetual calendar is spread out on three sub-dials: a calendar track (with day 31 highlighted in red) at 3 o’clock, a month track with a moonphase nestled within it at 6 o’clock, and a day track with a small indicator that counts the years until the next leap year.An elegant layout, jam packed with complications, without seeming overwhelmed. It manages to remain stylish and serious, as the central steel pair of slim feuille hands (without any lume) hover over the brushed finished dial.
