The IWC Portugieser Chronograph has long been defined by classical proportions and maritime elegance. Now, IWC Schaffhausen gives the model a contemporary, stealth-driven character with the new Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium (Ref. IW371631). Executed entirely in matte black Ceratanium, this limited edition of 1,500 pieces merges the refined dial architecture of the Portugieser with a technical, high-performance case material more commonly associated with IWC’s sportier collections.
The Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium measures 41mm in diameter and 13.1mm in thickness, maintaining the familiar proportions that define the modern Portugieser line. The case, crown, and pushers are crafted entirely from Ceratanium, which is IWC’s proprietary material that combines the lightweight strength of titanium with the hardness and scratch resistance of ceramic. The result is a monochromatic, matte-black aesthetic that reinterprets the traditionally dress-oriented Portugieser in a more contemporary light.

Ceratanium is produced through a complex process in which a titanium alloy is fired at high temperatures in a kiln, transforming the surface into a ceramic-like structure. This treatment enhances scratch resistance while preserving titanium’s low weight and corrosion resistance. The uniform dark finish extends seamlessly across the case components, reinforcing the watch’s cohesive, tactical appearance.

The chronograph pushers and crown follow the classic Portugieser profile, offering smooth actuation while maintaining visual symmetry. A convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial and enhances clarity. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet).

The black dial preserves the hallmark Portugieser layout with two vertically aligned sub-dials at 12 and 6 o’clock. This bi-compax configuration maintains visual balance and reinforces the collection’s clean, nautical-inspired symmetry. An inner flange featuring a precise quarter-second scale frames the dial, underlining its chronograph functionality.

Applied Arabic numerals and slim feuille-style hands are rendered in black, contributing to the watch’s stealth aesthetic. The restrained design avoids colour contrast, instead relying on subtle texture and form to maintain legibility. The vertical arrangement of the 30-minute counter at 12 and the small seconds at 6 preserves the elegant proportions that have long distinguished the Portugieser Chronograph.

The layered construction of dial, flange, and subdials introduces depth despite the monochrome palette. The hands and key markers are treated with luminescent material, ensuring low-light readability while maintaining the watch’s understated character.
