IWC Portugieser Automatic with Blue Panda Dial
Lately the releases by IWC Schaffhausen keep on coming to the delight of many of this historic brands enthusiasts. After reviewing several Pilot’s models and a newly designed Aquatimer, now we’re greeted by an addition to the Portugieser collection. This new “Portugieser Automatic” has preserved its original design, but mixed up the color-scheme by offering us a blue panda dial. The 42.3 mm case is made of stainless-steel with a polished surface and contrasting brushed case sides. Mounted to the case is a very thin steel bezel with an equally mirror-like polished finish. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases several jewels, rotating gears, and an oscillating weight decorated with a gold IWC medallion. It comes equipped with a knurled setting crown embossed with the IWC logo. An overall simple but effective and classic design. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).Time is exhibited on a white lacquered dial with blue arabic numerals, followed by a railway-track style chapter ring that also includes hour index markers to reinforce the numerals position. There are two blue sub-dials: a hacking small-seconds at 9 o’clock, and a power-reserve indicator with a touch of red to highlight the need to rewind, while also adding an extra hue to the overall color scheme. This layout makes it a “blue panda” dial, which further seems to pop and shine due to the glossy lacquer coating. The central blued steel feuille style hands offer a subtle, yet pleasing contrast to the regular steel hands seen on the nearing sub-dials. There is also a date window with black numerals at the 6 o’clock position.
