IWC Portofino Complete Calendar

The new “Portofino Complete Calendar” is the first IWC timepiece to include their newly developed complete calendar module. Remember that a complete calendar watch differs from an annual calendar (that can automatically adjust for 30-day months and advance to the 1st of the next month) or a perpetual calendar (that can further keep track of 28-day and 29-day February and even jump automatically to the 1st of March to keep the correct time). Instead the complete calendar simply guarantees the inclusion of: date, day, month, and a moonphase. The round 41 mm case is available in either 18k 5N rose gold or stainless-steel both with an overall mirror-like polished finish. Housed inside is a new caliber movement that is still rather thin and gave the case an 11.8 mm thickness.On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It includes an oscillating weight adorned by the trademark IWC golden medallion.It comes equipped with a knurled setting crown embossed with IWC logo. An elegant design with short stubby lugs that provide a robust and efficient look. All topped by an arched-edged sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a silver-plated dial with gold-applied rectangular hour index markers, except for partial Roman numerals at the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. Circling around the flange is also a printed minute track with double-digit numerals for every 5-minute increment. The complete calendar is spread out over two sub-dials. On the upper-half is the weekday indicator, while within the circle is a moonphase decorated by a blue sky, golden stars, and moon. On the lower-half is the month and date indicators. In both counters the outer portion is snailed to contrast with the silver-plated background.It is a classy and elegant layout, which manages to not overwhelm the user despite all its complications. Thanks to a very well managed layout all the indications can be read with a swift glance. The central pair of gold and gold-plated (steel model) leaf shaped hands are a standard elegant choice. Without any lume these hands rely on their natural shine and background contrast, for legibility.

The “IWC Portofino Complete Calendar” (References below) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 32150 with 21 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a silicon escape wheel, pallet fork, and pawl winding system.
