IWC Portofino Chronograph 39
Sporty and elegant all at once is the goal of the “Portofino Chronograph”, which was first introduced by IWC Schaffhausen, back in 1984. And now it continues to elegantly combine classic design with a sporty chronograph complication. This new addition to the “Portofino Chronograph 39”, further expands the range of options for this slightly reduced case version. A reduction of 3 millimeters ensures excellent wearability even on more slender wrists. It’s a great unisex option, which appears modeled by Gisele Bundchen, but could also be fittingly seen on various genders. The round stainless-steel case comes in a 39mm diameter with a 13mm thickness. Mounted to the case is a highly polished steel bezel that gives off a mirror-like shine, further enhanced by silvery white hued dial.On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a chronograph in classic column-wheel design, plus an oscillating weight decorated with the IWC medallion. It comes equipped with traditional mushroom-shaped pushers to operate the chronograph functions. Then placed between them is a knurled setting-crown embossed with the IWC logo, for an enhanced grip. All topped by a convex sapphire crystal with an antireflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a silver-plated dial with steel applied hour index markers (except for the partial Roman numerals), while circling around the flange is a minutes/seconds track ring with Arabic numerals for every 5-minute increment. This release follows the recent introduction of these new, smaller 39mm Portofino options. Due to the reduced canvas size compared to the 42mm models, this is a simplified layout variation without a day-date window or a 9 o’clock sub-dial. Instead these 39mm models only have a two-register chronograph display with snailed sub-dials: a small hacking seconds at 6 o’clock and a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock. A partial part of Roman numerals can be seen cut-off by these counters at the 6 and 12 o’clock spots. The rhodium-plated hands and appliques harmonize beautifully with the silver-plated dial.
