IWC Portofino Automatic Pointer Date
Design wise the Portofino collection by IWC Schaffhausen represents a classical and minimalist approach that finely encapsulates the most common timepiece shape. This new “IWC Portofino Automatic Pointer Date” is the first model in their series to feature a jumping date indicator. Since 1984 the multiple variants of this model continue to provide formal, yet casual aesthetics, suitable for all kinds of occasions. The round stainless-steel case comes in a 39 mm diameter with a 10.8 mm thickness. Mounted to the case is a highly polished steel bezel that gives off a mirror-like shine, further enhanced by a silvery white hued dial.On the flip-side is a solid screw-on stainless-steel caseback with exposed screws, plus a center portion with a circular brushed finish. It comes equipped with a knurled setting crown embossed with IWC logo. An elegant design with short stubby lugs that provide a robust and efficient look. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a silver-plated dial with gold-applied rectangular hour indices, except for the Roman numeral at 12 o’clock. Circling around the flange is a black printed minute track with double-digit numerals for every 5-minute increment, with minute 60 highlighted in red.On the lower-half within a gold framed sub-seconds runs a blued steel hand. It also doubles as a date indicator on a snailed track, while the center portion continues the overall silver hue. A touch of red reappears again in the form of the 31 date numeral. The central pair of gold-plated leaf shaped hands are an elegant touch. Without any lume these hands rely on their natural shine and background contrast, for legibility.
