At Watches and Wonders 2026, the brand pushes beyond the atmosphere with the new Pilot’s Watch Venturer Vertical Drive. Developed in partnership with VAST, a company building the next generation of commercial space stations, this unconventional timepiece is engineered specifically for life in space. Featuring a completely new user interface, an integrated GMT display and a crownless architecture, it represents one of the most radical pilot’s watches ever produced by IWC.
The Pilot’s Watch Venturer Vertical Drive is housed in a substantial 44.3mm case with a height of 16.7mm. Crafted from white zirconium oxide ceramic, the case combines lightweight properties with exceptional scratch resistance. The design is purposeful rather than elegant, reflecting the practical requirements of astronauts who must operate the watch while wearing thick gloves. Complementing the ceramic case are several components executed in Ceratanium, including the bezel, rocker switch and caseback.Turning the watch over reveals a Ceratanium caseback that conceals the movement inside. Unlike many contemporary high-end watches, the Venturer Vertical Drive prioritises durability and functionality over movement visibility, maintaining the instrument-like character expected of a professional tool watch designed for extreme environments.Replacing the traditional crown is a patented control system consisting of a Ceratanium rocker switch positioned on the left side of the case and a rotating bezel used for winding and setting functions. A sapphire crystal protects the dial while ensuring optimal legibility. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
The dial follows a highly functional design philosophy intended to minimise reflections and maximise readability. Finished in deep matte black, it avoids applied elements and polished surfaces, creating a clean and highly legible display suitable for both terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments. Printed white markings dominate the display, while the openworked black hour and minute hands feature luminous white outlines. A central GMT hand with a white triangular tip allows tracking of a second time zone on a 24-hour scale. A date aperture is positioned at 3 o’clock, while the watch name and logo are discreetly printed in white.Additional visual interest comes from the light blue accents used for the central seconds hand and the surrounding ring. These touches of color contrast nicely against the monochromatic dial architecture. White Super-LumiNova applied to the primary hands and GMT hand ensures excellent low-light visibility without compromising the technical appearance of the watch.

The “IWC Pilot’s Watch Venturer Vertical Drive” (Ref#: IW328601) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 32722 with 21 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with an integrated GMT function, the innovative Vertical Drive bezel-operated winding and setting system, a rocker-switch mode selector, and a date display. Power reserve can last up to 120 hours, when fully wound.
Mounted on this watch is an integrated white FKM rubber strap, secured by a Ceratanium pin buckle. The strap complements the futuristic appearance of the white ceramic case while providing durability and comfort in demanding conditions. Its lightweight construction balances the substantial dimensions of the watch, making it surprisingly wearable despite its technical specifications.
