IWC Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 AMG Editions
Although the IWC brand is known for its involvement in racing and Formula 1, especially with Mercedes-AMG and Lewis Hamilton, until now it hadn't fully explored its pilot watch concept beyond sky exploration. This left a gap in their collection for a watch specifically created for racetracks, inspired by cars, and capable of timing races. Enter the new IWC Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41, available in titanium (AMG version) or Ceratanium (Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team edition). It's a significant addition to their Pilot’s Watch collection, which has seen numerous editions but mostly variations on existing themes.Until now IWC had always equipped its motorsport themed timepieces with flight-oriented pilot’s watches, which although efficient never felt like the ideal choice. Now the new “Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41” despite the name, is actually a watch tailored for racetracks rather than planes. The 41.1mm case with a 14.8mm height and 50.8mm lug-to-lug is available in either grade 5 titanium with a brushed and polished finish; or Ceratanium with a matte finish. Both are mounted by a fixed bezel with a tachymeter scale in black polished ceramic. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It comes equipped with a semi-skeletonized oscillating weight. They differ between each other because the titanium model features a white “AMG” logo printed directly on the tinted sapphire crystal. It comes equipped with two inverted push-pieces to operate the chronograph and stop-watch features; with a setting-crown in-between them. Plus a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The glass has been secured against displacement by drop in air pressure. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet). Time is exhibited on a glossy dial in polished black lacquer with applied Arabic numerals in blackened nickel, a ring of index markers and the iconic IWC triangle between two dots at the 12 o’clock position. A precision second track is circling on the periphery, colored in white (titanium) or has parts in Petronas green accents (Ceratanium) for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas version. There are three snailed recessed totalizers with raised rings: a small hacking seconds at the 6 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position. It also includes a two-window day/date aperture aligned with the 3 o’clock position, placed between the IWC Schaffhausen logo inscriptions, which again appears in green for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas version. The propeller-style central hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
