IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX
And just like that IWC Schaffhausen has released a new addition to their celebrated Mark collection. One of the surprises here is why they haven’t made the occasion more memorable. But, besides all that it seems they’ve skipped the Mark XIX and made the successor to the Mark XVIII, this brand new “IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX”. The 40mm case is made of stainless-steel with radial brushed surfaces that contrast with the vertically brushed casebands, while mounted to the case is a polished bezel. All these opposing parts form a robust 10.8mm thick watch with corrosion resistant steel. On the flip-side is a steel screw-on caseback engraved by the 1930’s Junkers Ju 52, which is the German tri-motor transport aircraft whose cockpit instruments inspired the IWC designers that originally created the Mark 11 timepiece. This case features a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. It also comes equipped with a large screw-in crown embossed with the IWC logo, plus a machined circumference to provide firm grip for quick-sets.All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. This crystal has also been secured against displacement by a drop in air pressure. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on either a matte black or blue sun-ray dial, both with white printed Arabic numerals and the iconic IWC “triangle” with a dot on each side, located at the 12 o’clock position. While circling around the flange is a white printed minute track. If we try a side-by-side comparison of this dial’s layout versus the past, at first glance it almost looks the same. The first thing to jump out is the date window's prominent white background color. But, a close inspection also reveals altered index markers and more spaced out numerals. The central rhodium plated propeller-style hands, Arabic numerals and minute index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
