IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun “SFTI”
Some students get diplomas at graduation, but pilots tend to get watches! And with that in mind IWC Schaffhausen has released the civilian version of a watch conceived to honor the “US Naval Aviation Community”. This timepiece closely resembles what many TOPGUN graduates have exclusively worn on their wrists. The “SFTI” acronym on this limited edition pilots watch stands for “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor”.
The 44.5mm case is made ceramic (or, more specifically of black zirconium oxide) with a screw-on case back, which features an engraving of the “Top Gun” logo with the inscriptions: “UNITED STATES NAVY” and “FIGHTER WEAPONS SCHOOL”; plus the unique limited edition number of each individual timepiece. It comes equipped with two Ceratanium® push-pieces to operate the chronograph and stop-watch features; with a setting-crown in-between them. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides, secured against displacement by drops in air pressure. Water-resistance on this watch is capable of reaching up to 60 meters (196 feet).Time is exhibited on a black dial with Arabic numerals, followed by white minute index markers and slightly thicker markers for every 5-minute increment, except for the 12 o’clock position that features IWC’s iconic triangle with two dots. There are three sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 6 o’clock position; the 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position; and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock spot. While aligned with the 3 o’clock spot is a double-window for day-date, in between the IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN logo. There is a dash in red to add and extra hue to the overall color scheme in the form of the sub-seconds hand; plus a counter-weight to the chronograph hand in the shape of a jet. The central dagger-style hands, sub-seconds hands, Arabic numerals and index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
