IWC Pilot’s Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium

A while back we reviewed the “Le Petit Prince” themed Timezoner and now we’re welcoming yet another model of this incredibly versatile pilot watch in the form of this limited edition “IWC Pilot’s Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium”. It differs from previous versions by using the brand’s patented Ceratanium alloy for the casing, while preserving the use of ceramic for the bezel. All these choices highlight the innovative approach IWC Schaffhausen continues to employ via their alternative materials. The 46mm case is made of ceratanium which is essentially a titanium alloy with a matte black ceramic treatment. This combination manages to efficiently merge the lightweight and resistant properties of titanium with the scratch resistance and durability of the latest zirconium oxide ceramics. On the flip-side is a screw-on exhibition case back, which allows us to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It comes adorned by the IWC gold medallion.Mounted to the case is a black ceramic rotating bezel engraved with different major cities and their distinct time-zones, which doubles as the aforementioned rotating mechanism to change time-zones “on the fly”.The “Timezoner” function for setting another time-zone is easily regulated via the bi-directional rotating bezel. But, despite its ease of use this model does not allow to track two time zones at once (since the 24-hour aperture is synced to the current home-time we can only have one time-zone at a time). But switching back and forth between time-zones is easy, quick and efficient. It also comes equipped with an onion-style screw-in crown (also made of Ceratanium) that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 60 meters (196 feet). All topped by a sapphire convex crystal with an anti-reflective coating on both sides.Time is exhibited on a matte black dial with large white Arabic numerals, except for the 12 o’clock position that features IWC’s iconic triangle with two dots marker. Also circling around the inner-flange of the dial are thin white printed minute index markers, followed by slight thicker markings for every 5-minute increment.IWC has excluded the GMT hand on this model, but added a 24-hour altimeter-style aperture that functions as an AM/PM indicator, under the 12 o’clock position on the upper-half the dial. There is also a white date aperture at the 3 o’clock position, which is easily distinguishable from the second time-zone, thanks to their differentiating size. The central black outlined dagger-style hands have been filled with a light grey colored luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
