IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 iN Blue

The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 continues to solidify its place in the integrated luxury sports watch category with the addition of a classic dark blue dial. Originally conceived by Gerald Genta in 1976, the Ingenieur retains its timeless appeal while embracing modern updates. This latest release combines the iconic design elements of the collection, such as the grid-patterned dial and screw-on bezel, with a fresh yet quintessential color that enhances its versatility and sophistication. The barrel-shaped stainless steel case measures 40mm in diameter, 10.8mm in height, and 45.7mm lug-to-lug, making it both contemporary and wearable. The case combines brushed surfaces with polished bevels, offering a refined aesthetic true to IWC’s craftsmanship. A raised bezel with five functional screws, always aligned in the same position, is a hallmark of this design, echoing Gerald Genta’s original 1976 Ingenieur SL Jumbo. The caseback is crafted from solid steel, ensuring durability and further reinforcing the anti-magnetic properties of the watch. Beneath the caseback lies a soft-iron inner case, a functional component that protects the movement from magnetic fields. While the mechanics remain hidden, the emphasis on functionality aligns perfectly with the Ingenieur’s practical roots. It comes equipped with a screw-down crown, flanked by robust guards to enhance protection, and a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating for optimal legibility. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters  (328 feet), ensuring it is well-suited for everyday adventures and occasional aquatic activities. The Ingenieur Automatic 40’s dial is a striking homage to its 1976 predecessor, featuring the signature grid pattern stamped directly onto a soft iron blank. This intricate design is executed in a deep PVD-coated dark blue, a timeless and versatile color that enhances the watch’s sporty yet elegant appeal. The negative relief of the grid pattern adds texture and depth, drawing the eye to its geometric precision.Applied rhodium-plated hour markers and hands complement the dark blue backdrop. These elements are crafted with attention to detail, balancing functionality with aesthetics. A framed date window at 3 o’clock integrates seamlessly into the design, housing a double-digit disc for clarity and symmetry. For enhanced legibility in low-light conditions, the hour markers and hands are filled with white Super-LumiNova. This ensures that even in dim environments, the dial remains easily readable without compromising the sleek aesthetic of the overall design.
