IWC Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63

IWC Schaffhausen has maintained a long-standing partnership with Mercedes and its AMG sub-brand. This collaboration spans across both their road car offerings and their Formula 1 racing team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1. These two brands have a knack for complementing each other in various aspects, often pushing the boundaries of style and innovation. Today, we'll delve into IWC's flagship model, the iconic Big Pilot, which serves as the focal point for a new line of watches inspired by the Mercedes G-Wagon, a military vehicle transformed into a high-end luxury SUV. IWC has incorporated elements from the top-tier Mercedes-AMG G63 into the design of the new IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot G63, which is available in two distinct materials. The 46.5 mm case is made in either 18k Armor Gold or a Ceramic Matrix Composite, which both differentiate themselves as proprietary alloys, but ultimately equate to a rose gold version and a black ceramic one that brings much more uniqueness to its mix and appearance. On the flips-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Besides the dazzling of rotating gears and flashy jewels, both the Armor Gold or Ceratanium caseback have a decorated sapphire glass emblazoned by the Mercedes star.  In common both versions were constructed with a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields, plus a sapphire glass secured against displacement by drops in air pressure. It also comes equipped with the iconic diamond-shaped screw-in crown in Armor Gold or Ceratanium. Water-resistance can reach up to 100m (328 feet).Time is exhibited on a black dial with Arabic numerals in gold outlines with beige insert or white outline with light gray lume filling, that are mostly cut-up numbers due to the sub-dials overlay. While the periphery provides a framing with a minute track circling the flange following in each edition's color scheme.
But, what really stands-out are the black dials textured surfaces embossed with a relief-like technical structure inspired by the front grilles and air intakes of Mercedes-AMG performance cars, which were inspired by the G-Class “Grand Edition”. The bi-compax layout consists of two circular counters with a 7-day power-reserve indicator at 3 o’clock and small-seconds at the 9 o’clock spot. This is a very prominent aspect further enhanced by cutting thru with a heavy contrast in colors. The gold version even appears with a whiter interior that adds more shine and presence to the layout. As the IWC informed these counters were designed to mimic the iconic headlights of the G-Class.The central propeller-style hands both appear with the black outline before each fill synching up with the tone of their surrounding numerals. Legibility is further enhanced with the luminescent filling on all the indicators, numerals, and indices. There is also a discrete date window at 6 o’clock, placed in a very elegant way with the proper proportions towards the total design.
