IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Markus Bühler
Back in 2008, Markus Bühler crafted a remarkable timepiece for a competition organized by the "Institut de Formation à la Haute Horlogerie." His creation secured the first prize, marking the beginning of a promising journey, which led to him becoming the Associate Director of the Watch & Movement Assembly at IWC Schaffhausen. Now in 2023 he’s back in the spotlight to introduce the successor to his successful 2008 creation, with the new “Big Pilot's Watch 43 Tourbillon Markus Bühler IW329901”. Its main novelty resides in the incorporation of the iconic aircraft turbine, previously positioned at 6 o'clock, into a flying minute tourbillon. The 43mm case is made of 950 platinum with an overall polished finish. Thickness on this piece comes in at 14.6mm with a total measurement of 52mm from lug-to-lug.On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases several jewels, some rose gold gears, plus a pallet lever and escape wheel treated with Diamond Shell technology. This case features a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. It also comes equipped with a platinum screw-in crown designed in the iconic IWC big diamond shape with a machined circumference, which provides a firm grip for quick-sets. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an arched edge and anti-reflective coating on both sides. This crystal has also been secured against displacement by a drop in air pressure. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on a glossy black dial with white Arabic numerals and the iconic IWC “triangle” with a dot on each side, located at the 12 o’clock position, while circling around the flange is a white printed minute track with a rhodium-outline for each 5-minute increments, that doubles as an hour marker. On the lower-half of the dial we’re presented with a large flying tourbillon with a turbine design. The standard tourbillon setup is mostly covered up by a titanium turbine acting as the upper part of the tourbillon cage with hand-polished blades. There are 12 blades in total and the tourbillon is composed of 56 parts.Besides that this is the overall classic IWC layout that provides a simple and highly effective reading at a glance. The central rhodium plated propeller-style hands, Arabic numerals and minute index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
