IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Spitfire iN Bronze

The downsized version of IWC’s 46.2mm “Big Pilot’s Watch” has proven a success, despite the initial comments of some naysayers. It turns out there were many fans of this timepiece that found the 43mm case to be a better wrist fit. Plus the military green dial on this new edition was a great way to honor the “Spitfire” legacy.The 43mm case is made of a proprietary bronze alloy that is 50 percent harder than standard bronze. It will still develop a unique patina over time, which allows each timepiece to gain its own distinct look. On the flip-side is a solid titanium screw-on caseback decoratively engraved with the “Spitfire” aircraft, after which this timepiece has been named.This case features a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. It also comes equipped with a screw-in crown designed in the iconic IWC big diamond shape with a machined circumference, which provides a firm grip for quick-sets.All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. This crystal has also been secured against displacement by a drop in air pressure. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on a military green dial with white printed Arabic numerals and the iconic IWC “triangle” with a dot on each side, located at the 12 o’clock position. Circling around the flange is a ring of white printed minute markings. After every 15-minute interval the index markers appears in a faux-patina beige-like hue, just like the prominent triangle figure.Beside these essential indicators the dial has been left quite clear. Unlike previous models the “SPITFIRE” inscription has not been applied on the lower-half, but they have kept the “AUTOMATIC” lettering in a white font. Overall this is a classic IWC layout that provides a simple and highly effective reading at a glance.The central gold plated propeller-style hands, Arabic numerals and minute index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.

The “IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Spitfire” (Ref#: IW329702) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 82100 with 22 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a Pellaton winding system. Power reserve can last up to 60 hours, when fully wound.Mounted to the watch is a green buffalo leather strap with exposed beige stitching, secured to the wrist by a bronze pin buckle.
