IWC Aquatimer Automatic iN 2022

IWC is back in action with several releases across their various collections. We recently talked about a pair of Portugieser, plus there were many additions to the Pilot’s series. Now the permanent Aquatimer collection has been updated with a new caliber movement. As for aesthetics a quick look at this new release will have you convinced nothing has changed, but under the hood is where they choose to upgrade.The 42mm case is made of stainless-steel with a few polished accents, but an overall polished finish in contrasting radial or vertical directions. Mounted to the case is a special combination internal/external SafeDive system bezel for timing dives. On the flip-side is a screw on steel case back with a circular grained finished center, while the outer circumference has a lighter finish and technical inscriptions.It comes equipped with a knurled screw-in crown, embossed with the IWC logo. All topped by a convex sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).Time is exhibited on a black or blue sun-ray dial with white hour index markers, followed by a ring of smaller minute markings. Under the sapphire crystal we can see the inner rotating elapsed time ring, which is controlled by the external bezel.They are both linked together by a series of gears concealed under a cap on the case, located at the 9 o’clock position. The central hands and hour index markers, as well as some of the bezel markers have undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a discreet date window located at the 3 o’clock position.

The “IWC Aquatimer Automatic” (References below) is powered by the self-winding mechanical movement, caliber IWC 32111 with 21 jewels, 164 components, and 28,800 vph. This movement is made by ValFeurier. Power reserve can last up to 120 hours, when fully wound.Mounted to the watch is either a blue or black rubber strap, secured by a steel pin buckle. For an additional price you can also acquire the black dial model on a stainless-steel bracelet. All these watches come equipped with a quick-change system.
