Glashütte Original Seventies ‘X’ Chronograph

Glashütte Original Seventies ‘X’ Chronograph

Glashütte Original brings vintage racing flair to its 1970s-inspired collection with the new Seventies ‘X’ Chronograph, a bold North American exclusive dressed in classic panda colors. Limited to just 100 pieces, this chronograph blends the squared-off elegance of its TV-shaped steel case with a crisp black-and-white dial configuration that harks back to the motorsport watches of the 1960s and ’70s. The “X” in its name marks the 10th anniversary of the Seventies Chronograph line, while the red “10” in the 30-minute totaliser reinforces this milestone. With its flyback chronograph movement, integrated steel bracelet and additional rubber strap, this latest release underscores Glashütte Original’s reputation for high-end mechanical watchmaking infused with heritage style and modern-day execution.
This ‘X’ Chronograph features a 40mm x 40mm square stainless steel case with softly rounded corners and a bold, retro profile. Its surfaces are finely executed, alternating between vertical brushing and polished accents that emphasize the sculpted architecture of the TV-shaped design. Measuring 14.1mm in height, the case wears with noticeable presence yet remains well-balanced thanks to its integrated lugless construction.A sapphire crystal caseback offers a full view of the in-house calibre 37-02, revealing Glashütte’s signature finishing touches, including the skeletonized rotor with Double-G logo and striped bridges. The seamless integration of the case and bracelet adds to the unified aesthetic, while the fine-adjustment mechanism ensures ergonomic comfort. The crown is flanked by two polished pushers that control the chronograph functions and preserve the watch’s sporty symmetry. A flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating safeguards the dial. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
The dial presents a striking panda-style configuration, composed of a matte white lacquered surface and black galvanised sub-dials. The main dial is produced in-house by Glashütte Original’s dial manufacturer and showcases a refined layout that emphasizes clarity and contrast. The combination of white and black elements, along with subtle textures, recalls the classic chronograph designs of the 1960s and 1970s.At 3 o’clock sits the 30-minute chronograph totaliser, decorated with a snailed finish and featuring a distinctive red ‘10’ to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Seventies Chronograph line. Opposite, the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock is also snailed and integrates a slim power reserve indicator. A third totaliser for elapsed hours is arched across the top of the dial at 12 o’clock, while the brand’s large Panorama Date display is positioned at 6 o’clock, maintaining the overall symmetry of the dial layout. The applied white indices are outlined in black, harmonizing with the framed sub-dials and continuing the monochrome theme. The black hour and minute hands are filled with white Super-LumiNova for legibility in low-light conditions, and a red chronograph seconds hand provides a vibrant contrast. Together, these elements reflect Glashütte Original’s attention to detail and its ability to combine retro-inspired aesthetics with modern functionality.
