Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon iN Sand Gold
After a controversial debut in 2019, the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 collection has steadily evolved, refining its design and winning over collectors who were initially skeptical. Over the past few years, the line has expanded with more intricate finishes, bold complications, and improved proportions, positioning it as a modern alternative to AP’s more traditional offerings. Now, with the new Code 11.59 Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon 38mm, the brand introduces a smaller, gem-set evolution of the collection, featuring an elegant Sand Gold case, diamond embellishments, and a high-complication movement. While its 38mm size makes it more wearable, the watch retains the architectural complexity that defines the series, merging haute horlogerie with contemporary aesthetics.
The case is made of 18k Sand Gold, a proprietary alloy that combines the warmth of rose gold with a subtle, neutral beige tone. It measures 38mm in diameter, striking a balanced profile on the wrist, while the thickness remains proportionate for a tourbillon-equipped timepiece. From the top, the watch appears deceptively simple, but its complex architecture reveals itself upon closer inspection.
The ultra-thin, polished bezel frames the dial elegantly, and the signature octagonal mid-case adds depth and contrast. This mid-case, along with the upper surfaces of the lugs, is adorned with 235 brilliant-cut diamonds, totaling 1.2 carats, enhancing the luxurious character of the watch. On the flip-side we get a full view of the intricate movement within. The open caseback allows wearers to appreciate the finishing of the Calibre 2968, including its geometric skeleton bridges and the pink gold rotor. AP’s meticulous attention to detail ensures that even the underside of the case complements the overall refinement of the design, maintaining harmony between mechanical artistry and aesthetic appeal.
It comes equipped with a screw-down crown, discreetly set with a diamond along its edge. The sapphire crystal on the front has a double-curved profile, enhancing legibility while subtly playing with light reflections. Despite its elegant demeanor, the case is rated for a modest 30 meters (98 feet) of water resistance, emphasizing its role as a high-complication dress piece rather than an everyday sports watch.
Time is exhibited on a Sand Gold PVD dial, harmonizing with the warmth of the case for a refined monochromatic aesthetic. The dial surface is adorned with the signature “ripple” texture, first introduced to the collection in 2023. This vented concentric pattern radiates outward from the center, giving a sense of depth while subtly reflecting light at different angles. Unlike previous tourbillon models where the texture centered around the complication, here it is aligned with the slim skeleton handset, allowing the tourbillon to stand out naturally without dominating the design. The outer chapter ring features azurage finishing, contrasting against the light brushing of the recessed minute track. The hour markers are applied and faceted, positioned to catch light at different angles for enhanced legibility. Compared to previous Code 11.59 models, they stand slightly taller, creating a more pronounced and three-dimensional look. The slim, open-worked hands maintain the watch’s contemporary elegance, merging traditional watchmaking cues with a modern architectural feel. The contrast between brushed and polished elements on the markers and hands ensures clarity despite the monochrome dial. The flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock features a three-arm cage with radial brushing and hand-finished polished anglage, giving it an eye-catching mechanical presence.
Luminous detailing is used discreetly, enhancing legibility without disrupting the refined appearance. Super-LumiNova is applied to the hour markers and hands, allowing for subtle visibility in low light. Additionally, the vented “ripple” pattern plays with light, adding an extra dimension of contrast even in dim conditions. The combination of textured surfaces, precise finishing, and restrained use of luminous material ensures that the dial remains both elegant and functional.
