Unveiled as a bold experimental platform, the Chopard Zagato Lab One Concept marks a radical step forward in the decades-long partnership between the Scheufele and Zagato families. Drawing from motorsport engineering principles and infused with the spirit of concept car design, this 19-piece limited edition is not just a wristwatch, it’s a laboratory of form, materials, and mechanical architecture. With an avant-garde construction in ceramicised titanium and a movement integrated into the display surface, the Lab One Concept pushes past aesthetic tradition to explore what’s structurally and technically possible in modern horology.
The 42mm case of the Zagato Lab One Concept adopts a tubular architecture inspired by racing car chassis design, distributing mechanical stress through a rigid, ultra-light framework. Crafted from ceramicised titanium, which is a titanium alloy subjected to electroplasma treatment, the case achieves a remarkable hardness of approximately 1000 Vickers while maintaining titanium’s low density.
Its matte bead-blasted finish emphasizes the technical, no-nonsense character of the piece, while the watch’s mass remains exceptionally light at just 43.2 grams, including the strap. Visually, the angular lines and exposed components evoke a motorsport-grade engineering aesthetic.
The caseback is fitted with a sapphire crystal flush to the caseband, revealing the lightweight, skeletonized architecture of the in-house calibre. The display back showcases the tourbillon cage, the integrated dampening system, and the movement’s unconventional layout within the case’s tubular chassis. Unlike traditional forms, there are no lugs, only self-locking tubular loops that pivot up to 45 degrees, offering a unique articulation system that conforms naturally to the wrist.
The fluted crown, also made of ceramicised titanium and engraved with a steering wheel motif, sits at 3 o’clock. A box-shaped sapphire crystal spans the top, completely flush with the case profile and coated with anti-reflective treatment for optimal visibility. Water‑resistance can reach up to 50 meters (165 feet).
The dial of the Zagato Lab One Concept is not a separate layer but an integrated part of the architecture: the ceramicised titanium mainplate of the movement itself serves as the display surface. Machined in relief with multiple Zagato “Z” motifs and sharp geometric contours, it exudes a distinctly industrial and motorsport-inspired character. The display is minimal but purposeful, focused on legibility and structural beauty rather than decorative elements.
All dial-side elements are anchored directly into the movement. The hour and minute hands are openworked and rhodium-plated, shaped to resemble the spokes of a racing steering wheel. At 12 o’clock, a power reserve indicator mimics a fuel gauge, as a nod to the automotive world that inspired this timepiece, while a flying tourbillon is visible at 6 o’clock. The absence of applied indices or a printed minute track reinforces the concept-driven nature of the watch.
Finishing throughout is sharp and modern, with matte surfaces, polished bevels, and rhodium-plated logos for both Chopard and Zagato. The three-dimensional construction of the mainplate and indicators creates subtle depth effects, while the restrained monochromatic palette enhances the sense of cohesion and functional minimalism.
Chopard Zagato Lab One Concept
The “Chopard Zagato Lab One Concept” (Ref#: 168636-3001) is powered by the hand‑wound mechanical movement, caliber L.U.C 04.04-L with 29 jewels, 207 components, and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a 60-second tourbillon mounted in an aluminium carriage, ceramicised titanium bridges and mainplate, shock-dampening silent blocks, and a Variner balance with a Phillips terminal curve hairspring. Power reserve can last up to 60 hours, when fully wound. The movement is COSC-certified for chronometric precision.
Mounted on this concept watch is a technical fabric strap with hook-and-loop (Velcro-style) fastening, accompanied by a ceramicised titanium loop. An additional calfskin leather strap is also included, offering a more classic feel and secured by a ceramicised titanium pin buckle.
Despite its assertive presence and mechanical complexity, the watch wears extraordinarily light and ergonomic, with its pivoting lugs conforming naturally to the wrist. The fusion of technical fabric and lightweight metal reinforces the functional and futuristic ethos of the concept.
