Cartier Tank Française

Some may have forgotten that the year kicked off with the return of a classic. Over at Cartier they updated their “Tank Française” with several small changes that attribute it with a more sportier and streamlined look. It is now available in different alloys with three different size options, plus the large model includes an automatic movement.  To further celebrate the occasion Cartier hired the celebrated film director Guy Ritchieto make a small commercial movie with Catherine Deneuve and Rami Malek.  The new Cartier Tank Française can be had in either stainless-steel or 18k yellow gold in its charismatic case. It is available in three different sizes: small 25.7mm by 21.2mm, medium 32mm by 27mm, and large (only in steel) 36.7mm by 30.5mm. Although at first glance it may seem as if nothing has changed, on further inspection this model has only preserved its main outlines. And even some core essentials were altered, such as the crown set with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon that now holds a less prominent presence by appearing in a recess on the side of the case. The small and medium sized gold models can also be had with diamonds on its case sides. Other alterations were applied to the integrated bracelet, which now has a more consolidated design thanks to redesigned links and a single-piece end link. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).Time is exhibited on a square dial with Roman numerals and a railroad motif minute track. Instead of using printed numerals like the original did, these new models have applied metallic stickers that bring a bit more depth to the dial.The models also differ between themselves since the gold version has a champagne dial with a radial brushed finish and black numerals, while the steel versions come with a silver dial and silver numerals.They all come equipped with the classic blued steel central hour/minute hands. The larger steel model also includes a date aperture at 3 o’clock.

The “Cartier Tank Française” (References below) are all powered by a quartz movement, except the large model which is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 1853 MC with 25 jewels and 28,800 vph. It is based on the Sellita SW100-1 and comes equipped with a hacking seconds. Power reserve can last up to 37 hours, when fully wound.Mounted on the watch is either a stainless-steel or 18k yellow gold bracelet, secured to the wrist by a triple-folding clasp.
