Bulgari Octo Finissimo Skeleton 8 Days
Recently we saw Richard Mille take over the reign of “thinnest” timepiece with the release of their “RM UP-01 Ferrari”. Before them the brand we all associated (and still do) with groundbreaking craftsmanship was Bulgari, especially after witnessing them beat their own records a few years in a row. This latest “Bulgari Octo Finissimo Skeleton 8 Days” may not have returned the “thinnest” timepiece mantle back to them, but it has led to a new caliber movement with impressive features. The 40mm case is made of 18k rose gold with a mix of brushed surfaces and polished accents finish. Mounted to the case is a round gold bezel with a vertical brushed finish. This round bezel offers a pleasing contrast to the octagonal cut-out that opens up our view to the dial.On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases several purple hued jewels, moving gears, and a sand-blasted anthracite structure, secured in place by exposed screws. As an image further below reveals, light can fully shine through these engineered gaps.It comes equipped with a knurled setting-crown that has been embellished by a black ceramic insert. One more elegant touch that combined with all the other skilful details add up to a very meticulously crafted timepiece. The height of this case is a mere 5.95 mm. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance reaching up to 30 meters (96 feet).Time is exhibited on a skeletonized dial with gold applied hour index markers and a single Arabic numeral at the 12 o’clock position. The dial has an octagonal opening that allows us to marvel at all its moving intricacies. This openworked dial is finely decorated with skeletonized plates and bridges that have been applied with an anthracite PVD coating. There is a small-seconds sub-dial between the 6 and 9 o’clock positions. Plus running alongside this sub-dial is a gauge-shaped power reserve indicator, which is divided up in different sized portions to indicate how far off the need to rewind is. The central dagger-shaped gold hands are also hollowed out to allow a less obfuscated view to all the moving parts in display. A subtle but effective detail that further propels the skeletonized theme of this timepiece to the forefront.
