Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic iN CarbonGold

Bulgari has achieved iconic status in the world of watchmaking in a remarkably short span of under a decade, thanks to the Octo Finissimo's bold contemporary Italian design and sophisticated Swiss mechanics. The Octo Finissimo, beyond being a statement of style and class, has secured Bulgari's position as the master of ultra-slim movements, boasting 8 world records in ultra-thin watchmaking since 2014 under the banner of “La Estetica de la Meccanica.” That in of itself is a remarkable feat that leads to some overlooking the ingenious way the brand has chosen to incorporate different materials as the collection evolves. Recently during Geneva Watch Days 2023, Bulgari introduced two new versions of its ultra-thin luxury sports watches. Let’s take a look at the simpler time-only option. The 40 mm octogonal case is made of the brands proprietary “CarbonGold” which was first introduced back in 1993 and consists of a combination of high-tech carbon and gold elements. This mainly anthracite alloy with unique specks of color is very lightweight, while preserving a significant robustness. It measures in at 6.90mm thickness. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The movement has been decorated by hand with côtes de Genève, anglage, perlage finishing, and features a rose-gold plated platinum micro-rotor.Mounted to the case is a bezel that along with the mid-case section are both fully fixed to the back with screws. These gold screws can be seen contrasting with the darker carbon gold on the backcase. It comes equipped with a rose setting-crown with a ceramic insert, plus a gold placket attached to the side of the case. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on a “CarbonGold” dial with gold-plated hour index markers and the Arabic numerals for 6 and 12. Having the dial match the case alloy allows for a more solid demeanor, plus all the nuances colorations allow each individual piece to retain some appreciated uniqueness.   There is a small-seconds, sub-dial placed between the 6 and 9 o’clock portion of the dial. Despite taking up only a quarter of the overall canvas, this gold applied sub-dial attributes the piece with an extra luxurious touch. The central gold hands have a hollow center, which plays into the color scheme and provides an elegant harmony. This dress watch doesn’t have any luminescent filling, but the gold hands are intended to provide enough contrast to be able to allow for telling time even in dimly lit spaces.
