Bulgari Aluminum GMT Amerigo Vespucci Special Edition

It seems Bulgari has captivated many watch aficionados with their aluminum based watch collection. This recent “Aluminum GMT Amerigo Vespucci” is a special edition that pays homage to a tall ship of the Marina Militare, built in 1930, that’s now used to train Italian Navy cadets. It allows young naval apprentices to learn how to navigate using traditional equipment, such as sextants to calculate a ship's position or practice rigging canvas sails.. Many may not recall but America was named after Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512), the Florentine explorer and navigator who proposed a revolutionary theory in which the lands Christopher Columbus reached in 1492 weren’t part of Asia, as they initially thought. The name “America” is a Latinised version of Amerigo that first appeared on a 1507 map by German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller, which included data collected by Vespucci during his voyages to the New World. The round 40mm case is made of aluminum, which provides a very light weight of only 68.6 grams. Overall aluminum is 75% lighter than steel and 40% lighter than titanium, so it makes this a very comfortable choice, while still offering a sturdy resilience. On the flip-side is a DLC-coated titanium caseback, engraved with the inscription “NAVE SCUOLA AMERIGO VESPUCCI”, plus the saying “Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera” that roughtly translates to “It's not who begins, but who perseveres.”. It also includes the “LIMITED EDITION OF 1000” inscription, but hasn’t been given any unique series number. It also comes equipped with a black DLC-coated titanium crown.Mounted to the case is a black rubber bezel with a double “BVLGARI BVLGARI” logo engraving. The contrast of the aluminum “door hinge” lugs and case sides, with the black coated crown, plus the bright yellow flange, provide a solid composition. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).Time is exhibited on a black dial with white hour indexes and the Arabic numerals: 6 and 12, while a ring of yellow printed minute track circles around. The sloped flange is divided in half with a 24-hour scale in black and yellow. On the lower Bulgari has nicely placed a green and red rectangle around the GMT inscription, as a shout-out to the Italian background that inspired this particular timepiece. They’ve also added more subtle yellow highlights in the form of hand tips and a lollipop counter-weight. The central sword-shaped hands, hour index markers, Arabic numerals, and arrow-tipped GMT hand have all been fitted with Super-LumiNova, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date window with a white background and black numerals placed at the 3 o’clock position.
