Breitling has unveiled a long-awaited refresh of its Superocean Heritage line, and the changes are both thoughtful and timely. Leading the charge is the introduction of a brand-new 40mm case size, something the lineup has never featured before, accompanied by slimmer dimensions, refined dial aesthetics, and the debut of the COSC-certified B31 caliber with a sapphire exhibition caseback. Alongside the new 40mm variant, Breitling is also launching additional sizes, including 36mm, 42mm, and 44mm models, as well as a revamped 42mm chronograph. Altogether, the redesign balances classic cues with modern elegance, signaling a maturing identity for one of Breitling’s most enduring collections.
The newly redesigned Breitling Superocean Heritage collection introduces more ergonomic proportions across the board, with a strong focus on wearability. For the first time, the line welcomes a compact 40mm stainless steel case, a long-requested addition that complements the existing 42mm and 44mm sizes. Also debuting is a 36mm model, positioning the Superocean Heritage as a truly inclusive dive watch line suited to nearly any wrist. All models are crafted in fully polished stainless steel, exuding a refined sheen that balances the watch’s tool-watch DNA with a touch of luxury.Thickness has also been trimmed across the board, with the 40mm version measuring just 11.73mm thick and spanning 48.2mm from lug to lug. The familiar unidirectional dive bezel remains intact, featuring a clean insert and pronounced edge for confident operation. A newly introduced, mushroom-style crown helps to soften the overall silhouette, modernizing the profile without compromising the vintage-inspired aesthetic.
Turning the watch over reveals a screw-down sapphire caseback that frames the in-house movement within. The exhibition window is clean and technical, emphasizing the mechanical nature of the timepiece while reinforcing its 200-meter water resistance. Though visually restrained, it adds contemporary appeal to the overall design, especially in a segment where casebacks are often solid.
Whether in 36mm, 40mm, 42mm, or 44mm, the refreshed Superocean Heritage case architecture is more balanced, more comfortable, and more adaptable. A clear signal that Breitling intends this line to serve both longtime enthusiasts and first-time buyers looking for versatility with a dose of retro charm. Water-resistance can reach up to 200 meters (660 feet), making them all solid options for serious diving and daily wear.
The updated dial design of the new Superocean Heritage generation reflects a deliberate move toward refinement and versatility. Inspired in part by the Superocean Heritage ’57 models, the dial now features triangular applied hour markers, with a bold double marker at 12 o’clock for improved legibility and symmetry. The sunray-brushed finish radiates from the center, catching the light with subtle shifts in tone, particularly in the black and green variants currently offered in the 40mm model.
Breitling has pared back the typography, removing the gold “B” logo in favor of a more subdued applied version in polished steel. The font of the “Breitling” name has been delicately adjusted with improved kerning, allowing the text to breathe visually. These seemingly small changes add up to a sleeker, more contemporary dial that still honors the brand’s historic identity.
Paired with luminous markers and hands, the new layout offers strong legibility in low light while staying clean and balanced in daytime conditions. The date window is subtly integrated and unobtrusive, and the overall presentation signals Breitling’s confidence in quiet sophistication, dialing down visual clutter while elevating texture, proportion, and finish.
Breitling Superocean Heritage iN 2025
The new generation of the “Breitling Superocean Heritage” (References below) across all sizes is powered by the in-house automatic movement, caliber B31, with 26 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). This self-winding mechanical movement is officially COSC-certified as a chronometer, meeting strict accuracy tolerances of -4/+6 seconds per day. All time-and-date variants in 36mm, 40mm, 42mm, and 44mm use this reliable calibre. Power reserve can last up to around 78 hours, when fully wound.
