Breitling SuperOcean Heritage ’57 Capsule Collection
In the beginning of April, amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic that has caused widespread instability across all sectors of the global economy. We witnessed the first ever webcast by one of our beloved watch brands: Breitling. During this video their charismatic CEO, Georges Kern addressed the global crisis, while also emphasizing on the need to stay “connected” and find ways to reestablish “normality”. After which we were presented with a series of new releases. Today we’ll focus on the new: “Breitling SuperOcean 57”.
For 2020 Breitling has chosen to reintroduce the aesthetics of their original “SuperOcean” model, originally released back in 1957. Since the arrival of their new CEO, Breitling has made bold marketing moves by betting on celebrity ambassadors (Brad Pitt, Adam Driver, Charlize Theron), as well as diverse boutique pop-ups and social events, scattered around the globe.
But, despite their core message suggesting a “casual nautical lifestyle” brand. Most of the releases in this new era, which began with the “Navitimer 8” collection, back in early 2018. Have not really synched up with this “sea-worthy” marketing. Maybe the closet they came was in the form of the environmentally themed “Breitling SuperOcean Chronograph Heritage Ocean Conservancy” (Ref#: A133131A1G1W1) model, that aimed to create social awareness, and was even crafted with some elements made out of an Eco-friendly material.
But, while that was a limited edition, here we get a full range collection that properly encapsulates that initial nautical branding.
All of these releases come in a round 42mm case that can be had in either: stainless-steel, or a two-tone steel with 18k red gold version. Mounted to the case is a rotatable bi-directional bezel with a riveted circumference, crafted out of steel or gold, and etched with simple hourly index markers. It also comes equipped with a non screw-locked setting-crown that has two gaskets.
On the flip-side we encounter a solid case back that has been engraved with an inscription that reads “57 HERITAGE” and “SuperOcean” in a cursive font.
All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal, glareproofed on both sides. Water-resistance on these timepieces can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on either a black or blue dial with white printed minute index markers, while tucked away amongst them are double-digital numerals, for every 15-minute increment. More notable and defining characteristics of this vintage inspired dial are the: segmented hour hand and a quartet of faceted “wedge” markers piercing thru circular index markers at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions.
The central alloy and hour index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a limited edition model of only 250 manufactured pieces, that has been decorated with a rainbow-themed dial that permeates its circular and rectangular hour markings.
