Breitling Navitimer Automatic 41 and GMT Version
Breitling is marking its 140th anniversary with the launch of the Navitimer Automatic and GMT 41, which retains the iconic slide-rule bezel but replaces the traditional chronograph with a GMT function. This update is part of Breitling's 2022 revamp, which introduced a more vintage-inspired aesthetic with compact cases. Although the absence of the chronograph might seem a departure from the Navitimer’s original spirit, the cleaner design sans pushers and triple registers appeals to those who prefer simplicity. The new Navitimer Automatic GMT 41 is more affordable compared to its chronograph counterparts, which are equipped with Breitling’s in-house B01 movement. This model uses an ETA caliber, positioning it as a competitively priced option in the accessible GMT watch market. While it may not match the value proposition of some competitors that use in-house movements, it benefits from the classic Navitimer look, now enhanced with a useful second time zone function. The round 41mm case with a thickness of 11.65mm is available in stainless steel or 18k red gold, with an additional two-tone variant available for the Automatic model. The design is characterized by a notched bezel and dynamic alternating polished and brushed finishes that capture and reflect light beautifully. On the flipside, both models feature a solid caseback that conceals the intricate mechanics of the movements within. The lug width of 22mm ensures a comfortable fit that complements the classic yet robust design of the Navitimer. They come equipped with a knurled setting-crown embossed with the Breitling “B” logo. All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides, enhancing visibility and durability. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet).Time is exhibited on a variety of dial colors that include black, blue, silver, ice blue, and green, all with applied hour indices. Encircling the main dial on all options is a white or black printed ring featuring minutes and seconds markings. Finally further out we encounter a sloped rotating flange designed to assist with calculated countdowns. Both options are very similar but the Navitimer Automatic boasts an overall cleaner dial design, while the GMT version features a central 24-hour scale that maintains the prominence of the intricate slide rule, essential for pilots and aviation enthusiasts. This design refinement enhances both functionality and visual appeal, staying true to the Navitimer's heritage as a tool for aviators. The full-gold versions of these watches carry the 'Origins' label, ensuring that the gold used is responsibly mined in accordance with the Swiss Better Gold Association's environmental and social standards. This commitment to sustainability adds a layer of value beyond the aesthetic and functional aspects of the watch.
