Breitling B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42

Recently things got complicated as Breitling released a series combining a tourbillon with a chronograph to create a trio named after each of the Breitling founders, Leon, Gaston and Willy. Each model has its own distinct dial tone and is crafted out of a particular alloy, while in common all feature a tourbillon in center stage. As Breitling states “The Premier Tourbillon is a series for people who love the mechanics—and magic—of watchmaking.” The 42mm case is available in either 18k rose gold  (Léon), white gold (Gaston), or platinum (Willy), all with a mix of polished surfaces and brushed case bands. This is a quite hefty timepiece with a height of 15.2 mm.On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features an openworked oscillating weight with the “B” logo, plus the reverse side of the tourbillon appears in contrasting 18k gold. It comes equipped with two square pushers to operate the chronograph functions, while in between there is a large non screw-locked crown with two gaskets and embossed with the “B” logo. All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal glare-proofed on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet). All these watches have their own themed color, just like the distinct alloy for each of the Breitling founders: Léon (cream), Gaston (anthracite), and Willy (blue). Time is exhibited with applied Arabic numerals, followed by a printed minutes/seconds rings, while parallel to it is a elapsed scale track. Our attention is instantly drawn to the tourbillon at the 12 o’clock spot. It houses a balance wheel, balance spring and escapement in a rotating cage that keeps the  entire assembly in perpetual motion. Usually the tourbillon appears on the lower-half of a dial, but Breitiling has opted to put it at the 12 o’clock position. It seems like a minor shift in layout that wouldn’t alter our perception that much, but the top spot really gives this model a unique and bold look. There is also a small seconds sub-dial aligned at 6 o’clock. The syringe style central hands have all been fitted with a luminescent filling for an enhanced legibility.
