Breguet concluded its celebrations of the tourbillon’s 225th anniversary with one of the most elaborate interpretations of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s invention. The new Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887 combines the manufacture’s tourbillon with a perpetual calendar and running equation of time, but its most personal feature lies above them all: a hand-painted night sky recreating the heavens over Paris on the date of Breguet’s historic patent, which can instead be customized to commemorate a moment chosen by its owner.
The Breguet Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887 is housed in a substantial 43.9mm platinum case measuring 11.8mm thick. Despite accommodating one of Breguet’s most complicated contemporary movements, the case retains the distinctive architecture of the Marine collection, whose nautical identity recalls Abraham-Louis Breguet’s appointment as chronometer-maker to the French Royal Navy in 1815.

The precious-metal construction gives this anniversary edition additional presence while providing a cool-toned frame for its intensely blue astronomical display.

Around the back, a sapphire crystal caseback reveals the extensively decorated caliber 581DPE. The movement carries an elaborate hand-engraved depiction of the 18th-century Royal Louis sailing across the ocean, with elements executed in Breguet gold contrasting against the rhodium-plated representation of the sky and sea.

The barrel drum introduces a rosace motif for the first time within the Marine collection, also hand-engraved and crafted in Breguet gold, while the transparent back provides a view of the movement’s slim automatic architecture and peripheral winding rotor.

The crown maintains the sculptural, nautical character of the Marine case while providing control over the watch’s time and calendar functions. A sapphire crystal protects the intricate two-part dial and its combination of astronomical and calendar indications. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).

The centerpiece is a two-part astronomical dial recreating the night sky over Paris at midnight on June 26, 1801, the date on which Abraham-Louis Breguet received his patent for the tourbillon. At its center is a sapphire dial decorated by hand with gradient-blue Grand Feu enamel, translucent on its underside, while its upper surface carries a miniature painting depicting the moon, constellations and stars in their historically accurate positions.

Owners can make the display even more personal by specifying a date, time and location, allowing Breguet to recreate the sky associated with a meaningful moment of their choosing.

Applied gold Arabic numerals surround an exceptionally information-rich display. The 60-second tourbillon occupies 5 o’clock, while the perpetual calendar indications extend across the upper portion of the dial from approximately 9 to 3 o’clock. Between 7 and 9 o’clock sits the 80-hour power-reserve indication.

The running equation of time is particularly distinctive: rather than simply indicating the difference between civil and true solar time on a separate scale, a dedicated solar minute hand tipped by a faceted golden sun allows true solar time to be read directly alongside conventional mean time.

The layered sapphire, enamel and applied indications give the dial considerable visual depth, with the blue gradient providing an atmospheric background for the gold elements and exposed tourbillon. Its astronomical scene is executed in luminescent enamel, allowing the hand-painted constellations and moon to emerge in darkness, while the hands incorporate blue phosphorescent material. This nighttime effect transforms the historical sky map from a purely decorative miniature into a luminous representation of the heavens that inspired it.

Breguet Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887
The “Breguet Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887” (References below) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 581DPE with 563 components and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a peripheral automatic winding rotor, 60-second tourbillon with titanium carriage and silicon Breguet balance spring, perpetual calendar, power-reserve indication and running equation of time displaying true solar time through a dedicated solar minute hand, with the equation cam positioned on the tourbillon axis. Power reserve can last up to 80 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted on this watch is either a blue rubber strap decorated with the Quai de l’Horloge motif and secured by a folding clasp, or a full platinum bracelet that extends the precious metal of the case around the wrist. The rubber configuration gives the 5887 a sportier, more overtly nautical character while emphasizing the blue tones of its astronomical dial, whereas the platinum bracelet creates a considerably more substantial and formal presentation.

The Breguet Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887 is limited to just 25 pieces, with each owner able to retain the historically accurate Paris sky of June 26, 1801 or personalize the dial with the sky corresponding to a chosen date, time and location.
