Blancpain X Swatch Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Ocean of Storms
It was back in September of 2023 that Blancpain & Swatch made headlines with their joint venture centered around the iconic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Following the positive response to the Moonswatch collaboration between Swatch and Omega, the Scuba Fifty Fathoms was introduced, embodying the essence of the renowned dive watch through the use of bioceramic, which was a lightweight material available in five different colors. Now, a sixth variant, named “Ocean of Storms” has been introduced to the collection. It draws inspiration from the Oceanus Procellarum, a vast sea on the Moon covering over 10% of its surface, which is why this new addition is presented in a deep black hue. Similar to its predecessors, it maintains a mechanical design despite its main alloy.Once again the case has meticulously taken inspiration from the classic Fifty Fathoms by replicating its identical shape and proportions of 42.3mm diameter, a 14.4mm thickness and a 48mm lug-to-lug measurement. It is made out of bioceramic which is a unique and patented blend of two-thirds and one-third biomaterials derived from castor oil, and come in five different colors. Mounted to the case is a unidirectional rotating bezel in bioceramic. This is one clear aspect in which the Blancpain collaboration with Swatch is a step-up compared to the Omega MoonSwatch because their bezel is actually functional and not just a decorative component. The bezel also includes an anti-scratch coating insert in black with a 60-minute scale in white. On the flipside is a transparent exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features five inspirational inscriptions on ceramic portion: “PASSION FOR DIVING”, “LICENCE TO EXPLORE”, “OCEAN BREATH”, “PROTECT WHAT YOU LOVE” and “IMMERSE YOURSELF”, while through the glass we get to gaze at an illustration of the Oceanus Procellarum (Ocean of Storms) region of the moon and the Okenia Luna nudibranch in digital print. It comes equipped with a knurled screw-down crown, nestled between small crown guards, just like a real full alloy Fifty Fathoms. Instead of the crown just coming embossed with the Blancpain “B” logo, it features that as well as the Swatch “S” logo. Meanwhile the left-side caseband has a full “swatch” inscription in lower-case letters. But just as occurred with the previous five releases, this model also has one clear understandable shortcoming (compared to the true “Fifty Fathoms”) in terms of water-resistance which instead of reaching up 300 meters (1000 feet), can only get as far as 91 meters (298 feet). It is all topped by a front glass in bio-sourced material treated with an anti-scratch coating.Time is exhibited on a black sunburst dial with triangular hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 3, 6, 9, and 12. The flange portion has a minute track ring made up of smaller white colored markings. The upper half of the dial has the Blancpain and Swatch logo both printed in white, while on the lower half we find inscriptions for “SCUBA”, “Fifty Fathoms” in a cursive font, and the water-resistance info highlighted in an orange font, which adds an extra touch of color and matches with the tip of the running seconds hand. The central FF-shaped hands, hour index markers and Arabic numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions, which seamlessly blends in the background with a black interior and white numerals.
