Blancpain X Swatch Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Collection
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain collaborated with Swatch to create a fun and unique version of its iconic scuba diving watch. Together, these two brands from the Swatch Group have introduced five Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms models. These watches are a fusion of both brand's strengths, featuring innovative bioceramic materials, water resistance, and a mechanical movement capable of running for 90 hours on a single wind. Each model pays tribute to one of the world's five oceans, a cause Blancpain has been deeply invested in and vocal about protecting and preserving. In terms of case these watches have very meticulously taken inspiration from the classic Fifty Fathoms by keeping an identical shape and proportions of 42.3mm diameter, a 14.4mm thickness and a 48mm lug-to-lug measurement. They are made out of bioceramic which is a unique and patented blend of two-thirds and one-third biomaterials derived from castor oil, and come in five different colors. Mounted to the case is a unidirectional rotating bezel in bioceramic. This is one clear aspect in which the Blancpain collaboration with Swatch is a step-up compared to the Omega MoonSwatch because their bezel is actually functional and not just a decorative component. These bezels also include an anti-scratch coating insert in orange, black, blue or gray with 60-minute scale. On the flipside is a transparent exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. All five watches proudly display intricate illustrations of colorful nudibranchs, each representing a different species from the world's five oceans. These captivating aquatic creatures are artfully featured on the watch's rotor using digital printing technology.
It comes equipped with a knurled screw-down crown, nestled between small crown guards, just like a real full alloy Fifty Fathoms. Instead of the crown just coming embossed with the Blancpain “B” logo, it features that as well as the Swatch “S” logo. Meanwhile the left-side caseband has a full “swatch” inscription in lower-case letters. But, one clear understandable shortcoming (compared to the true “Fifty Fathoms”) is the water-resistance which instead of reaching up 300 meters (1000 feet), can only get as far as 91 meters (298 feet). It is all topped by a front glass in bio-sourced material treated with an anti-scratch coating. The dials are available in 5 different colors (beige, yellow-orange, blue, green or ice-white) and were modeled after the 5 main oceans (Arctic, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Antarctic). In common all watches exhibit time with a mixture of round, rectangular and triangular hour index markers, plus they include the same central hands. After that each model has small nuances such as different decoration on their lower-half, while others feature a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions. Let’s quickly glance at each model’s front and back side with these photos and choose our personal favorite. The “Arctic Ocean” comes in a beige Bioceramic case, orange bezel, warm beige dial with gradient effect, No-Radiation logo and no-date display. The “Antarctic Ocean” comes in a ice white Bioceramic case, gray bezel, gray dial with gradient effect, Mil-Spec moisture indicator and no-date display. The “Pacific Ocean” comes in a yellow-orange Bioceramic case, black bezel, white to black gradient dial and date display. The “Atlantic Ocean” comes in a blue Bioceramic case, blue bezel, blue dial with gradient effect, and date display. The “Indian Ocean” comes in a green Bioceramic case, black bezel, green dial with gradient effect, and date display.
