Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tourbillon 8 Jours

Blancpain has decided to update their “Fifty Fathoms 8 Jours” version, originally launched in 2017. The “Fifty Fathoms” moniker is a reference to the watches depth rating, since it was used by the French Navy commando frogmen. But the presence of a tourbillon on a dive watch is not very common, thus elevating its impressive horological craftsmanship. A solid option for those seeking to add extra “complications” to their dives. The 45mm case is available in either quality grade 23 titanium or 18-carat red gold. This is the first time this model has been made available in titanium, while the red gold had already been an option previously. Where both these cases differ from previously is in the satin-brushed finishing, which provides a more casual look.On the flipside we have a transparent sapphire exhibition case back, which allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It comes equipped with an openworked oscillating weight, plus a Côtes de Genève and circular graining finishing.Mounted to the case is a ratcheted uni-directional bezel in either titanium or 18k red gold, engraved with a 60-minute scale. This is a domed sapphire bezel, which is a hallmark of the “Fifty Fathoms” displaying the classic diamond shape at noon, followed by the large Arabic numerals at 15, 30, and 45 minute mark.It also comes equipped with a setting-crown, plus on the left-side rim of the case they have engraved “BLANCPAIN” in a bold font. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance reaching up to 300 meters (1000 feet).Time is exhibited on a blue sunburst dial with applied hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 3, 6, and 9; while also being followed by small white printed minute index markers, circling the inner flange. On the upper-half of the dial we encounter a large opening with the flying tourbillon, which is the main attraction of this timepiece. Instead of securing the tourbillon with a bridge on each side, Blancpain has cantilevered it by securing the plate on one side. This alternative allows for a less obstructed view of the mechanism through the dial aperture. The central hands, Arabic numerals, hour index markers, as well as the bezel inserts have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
