Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Frosted Gold

Recently we’ve been giving brief overviews of several releases by Audemars Piguet, which introduced its collection for the first half of the year. The majority of these new releases are composed of updates to models that are still available in their current lineup. In today's highlight, we delve into the "Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Frosted Gold" with its striking smoked yellow gold dial, constructed entirely of yellow gold. Similar to the also newly released “Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph (Ref#: 26240BA)” this dial's unique gradient effect pays homage to the legendary yellow gold Royal Oak models that characterized the 1970s.
The 37mm case with a height of 9.1mm is made of hammered 18k yellow gold, which gives the case an overall sparkling aesthetic, hence the designation “Frosted gold”. Mounted by the iconic “Royal Oak” octagonal shaped bezel that continues the frosted gold style with exposed 18k white gold screws and polished bevels. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features purple jewels, several golden geras, and a gold oscillating weight carved out in the form of the “AP” logo. Housed inside is the caliber 5900 that debuted back in 2022 with a slim 3.9 mm thickness. It also comes equipped with a screw-down crown adorned with the AP logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a smoked yellow-gold-toned sunburst dial with gold applied hour indices, followed by a white printed minute track ring of black. The dial also has a gradient effect that starts with a gold center and grows darker as it stretches out to the periphery to form a black flange. The pristine dial, featuring radial brushing, complements the subtly textured frosted case beautifully. While the dial's gradient smoked effect, transitioning from yellow gold to deep black towards the periphery is another standout characteristic, achieved via a meticulously applied hand varnish.Adding a striking contrast to the yellow gold backdrop, both elements feature a black rhodium-coated 24k gold logo positioned slightly below the 12 o'clock mark. The central gold hands and hour index markers have all been given a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date window at the 3 o’clock position.
