Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked Cactus Jack
Audemars Piguet has a history of collaborating with pop culture, especially in creating watches that resonate with different worlds like sports, art, and entertainment. This year, they partnered with Travis Scott's brand, Cactus Jack, for a limited edition Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked watch, nicknamed "The Chocolate AP" after Scott's album. While some might find Scott controversial, the collaboration's aesthetic impact is remarkable. This isn't Audemars Piguet's first dive into music and sports collaborations, having worked with Jay-Z and LeBron James in the past. Such partnerships have given the brand visibility beyond watch enthusiasts. While it might not appeal to everyone, it's boosted the brand's exposure and likely contributed to its sales success. The newest collaboration with Travis Scott continues this trend, creating a unique collectible watch alongside his previous successful collaborations with brands like Air Jordan and Dior's Cactus Jack x Dior collection. The 41mm case with a 9.9mm thickness is made of brown ceramic with a mix of polished accents and a vertically brushed surface finish. Mounted to the case is AP’s signature octagonal bezel also with a vertical satin-brushed finish and eight exposed 18k white gold screws. On the flip-side is a transparent exhibition case back, which allows a view of the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The intricate details on the bridges, cock, main plate, barrel drum, and ratchet wheel showcase exquisite craftsmanship, featuring meticulous hollowing and decoration with numerous internal angles. In the special Travis Scott/Cactus Jack edition, the 22k pink gold oscillating weight is openworked, adorned with satin brushing, polished chamfers, and engraved with both 'Audemars Piguet' and 'Cactus Jack' signatures. The Cactus Jack emblem is prominently displayed at the center of the oscillating weight. Additionally, the caseback bears the inscription 'Utopia is a state of mind,' a nod to Travis Scott's latest album. It comes equipped with a setting-crown adorned by the AP logo. All topped by a glareproofed sapphire crystal. Water-resistance can reach up to 20 meters (65 feet).Time is exhibited on a sapphire dial that exposes most of the inner mechanical movement, but there are so many details spread across other elements immediately calling for our attention that the transparency is almost immediately glanced over. There are three rose gold framed sub-dials within the openworked dial: a date display at 3 o’clock; a day indicator at 9 o’clock (with the stylish “Cactus Jack” hands); and finally the current month and leap year can be observed at the 12 o’clock position. It also includes a Moonphase indicator at 6 o’clock with a star-lit dark blue sky, but instead of the standard moon we get Cactus Jack’s emblematic smiley face with its mouth sewn shut on a blue aventurine base. The sloped rotating inner bezel appears in brown with a combination of even numbers and dots for the odd numbers that mark out the week indications. These numerals follow the same “Cactus Jack” calligraphy, as do all the other numerals. The central PVD brown gold hands, hour index markers, sub-counters, and the moonphase section, have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. As long as the user keeps the watch fully wound, the perpetual calendar will not require a correction until 2100.
