Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph End of Days
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the “Royal Oak Offshore” we saw Audemars Piguet release several new models throughout the year. This latest edition appears in a color scheme that will have you singing “black and yellow, black and yellow” immediately. But, in fact this new Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph is a homage to the 1990’s movie ‘End of Days”, starring Arnold Schwarzenegar, who actually gave out specific recommendations, including this particular color scheme.
This was a pivotal moment as highlighted by the brands CEO, François-Henry Bennahmias “The collaboration with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the Royal Oak Offshore End of Days in 1999 helped to put the collection on the map, especially in the street culture scene. For the 30th anniversary of the Offshore, it was an obvious choice for us to pay tribute to this iconic timepiece.”The 43 mm case is made of black ceramic with a mix of polished bevels and a vertically brushed surface finish. Mounted to the case is AP’s signature octagonal bezel also with a vertical satin-brushed finish and eight exposed stainless-steel screws. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The case portion is made of titanium and is engraved with a “LIMITED EDITION OF 500 PIECES” inscription. The rotor is made of rose gold, but due to a special coloring process it appears in anthracite gray and is decorated with the “AP” inscription. It comes equipped with two black ceramic push-pieces that activate the chronograph functions. Between them are titanium protecting crown guards and the screw-in setting crown adorned with the AP logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on a black dial with the signature Audemar Piguet “Méga Tapisserie” pattern dial with applied 18k white gold hour index markers with black nickel coating. While circling around the sloped flange is a yellow printed tachymeter scale. It features three snailed sub-dials with white hands: a 12-hour counter at 3 o’clock, a sub-seconds at 6 o’clock, and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. There is also a date window placed between the 4 and 5 o’clock spots. On the upper-half of the dial instead of the long-form "Audemars Piguet" logo (like the 50th anniversary chronograph models had) it appears as “AP”. Due to the stark contrast of the black and yellow color palette, this iconic tri-compax layout appears very well defined. The central hands are also made of white gold (like the applied hour markers), but coated in black nickel which alters their color. All these indicators were filled with a yellow luminescent filling, extending the main color themed into the dark.
