Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT iN Green
The expression “flex” translates to a form of “showing off”, a form of highlighting expertise. That’s exactly what Audemars Piguet does with this concept watch, which demonstrates the cutting-edge talent of their artisans. This “Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon GMT” was originally released back in 2020. Now it returns in a military green and black ensemble, while fitted with high-end contemporary materials. The 44mm case is made of sandblasted titanium with a grainy and textured aesthetics. This lightweight material was an excellent choice, which provides robustness and keeps a comfortable wrist fit, despite the considerable size.
On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
Mounted to the case is Royal Oak’s iconic octagonal bezel made of green ceramic with a satin brushed finish, polished chamfers, and the standard 8 exposed white gold screws. This hefty looking case measures in at 16.1mm thickness. It comes equipped with a green ceramic screw-down crown embossed with the AP logo, while nestled between a pair of push-piece guards. All topped by a glare-proof sapphire crystal on the front and back. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).Time is exhibited on an open-worked dial with asymmetric black CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) sandblasted bridges. To assist with telling time a sloped flange can be seen circling around with white hour index markers. On this upper-half portion there is also a green CVD insert with the AP logo in rose gold. Its various complications can be seen scattered around and seem a bit overwhelming at first glance, but if we take them on one-by-one. The function selector positioned at 6 o’clock displays the crown position: Neutral (N), time-setting (H) and winding (R). Then there is a flying tourbillon at 9 o’clock with a rose gold gear and several shiny jewels. On the opposite side we find a second time-zone indicator at 3 o’clock, with white numerals outlined in black, while the day/night disc is colored in white for daytime and green numerals for the night. The semi-hollow central rose gold hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility.
