Zenith Defy Revival A3691

Back in February (nearly a year ago) Zenith reached into their archives to reintroduce their earliest Defy model, circa 1969. This timepiece is quite charismatic thanks to an elaborate design, which is reminiscent of Gérald Genta’s Royal Oak. Although it has its own look and actually predates the Audemars Piguet model. Following a successful reception Zenith is now releasing the “Defy Revival A3691” in a non-limited edition. The octagonal 37mm case is made of stainless-steel with a polished and brushed finish, while mounted to the case is a tetradecagon (14-sided) bezel with a polished finish. The sturdy look of this watch, back when it was first released earned it the “coffre-fort” nickname, which is French for “bank vault”. Unlike the original Defy model that had a solid caseback, on this flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases a few purple jewels, golden gears, and the star-shaped custom rotor with a vintage-style matte finishing. It comes equipped with an oversized pillbox  screw-down setting crown, adorned by the Zenith star logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal which is a deviation from the original acrylic, but a modern addition that offers much greater scratch resistance. Plus it assists with an enhanced water-resistance that can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).Time is exhibited on a gradient ruby red dial with applied rhodium-plated and faceted hour index markers, followed by a ring of white printed minutes/seconds track. The main hour indexes have an unusual configuration of big squares with horizontal grooves, which contrast with the minutes/seconds ring by going in opposite directions. The sword-shaped hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a white date window between 4 and 5 o’clock.
