Zenith Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon
In just under a year Zenith has introduced its “Defy Extreme” collection and taken it through all sorts of complications. The latest pair of releases has led the brand to proclaim “The DEFY Extreme Double Tourbillon represents the pinnacle of innovative haute horlogerie as ZENITH envisions it. A true advancement of high-precision chronographs, it is equipped with two independent tourbillons completing rotations in 60 seconds for the time-keeping tourbillon and 5 seconds for the chronograph’s tourbillon, making it among the fastest tourbillons ever made.”The 45mm case is available in either titanium with a vertically brushed finished and polished accents that provides a subtle contrast, or a black carbon fiber option with 18k sandblasted rose gold accents. Both of these alloy options are revered for their lightweight qualities and high resistance to corrosion.Mounted to the case is a matching titanium or black carbon fiber bezel, while layered between that and the main case is an intermediate 12-sided bezel piece. The rose gold portion sandwiched between the black carbon fiber offers very pleasant aesthetics. It comes equipped with two wide pushers to operate the chronograph functions, which are also framed by blocks of rose gold or darker titanium that serve as pusher protectors. These elements also double as crown guards for the screw-down crown rising between them. Water-resistance can reach up to 200 meters (656 feet).Time is exhibited on an openworked dial with applied hour index markers, followed by a black ring with white printed minute markings. The inner sloped flange is a second gray ring with a white printed 100-scale that includes Arabic numerals for every 10-minute increment. There are two hollowed out counters with gray rings: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 60-minute counter at 6 o’clock. On the upper-half of the dial is a semi-circle that provides a frame to the Zenith logo, while highlighting the power reserve indicator. The missing smalle-seconds was excluded to allow the inclusion of a double tourbillon that takes up about half of the dials surface. One tourbillon is rotating once every 60 seconds and the other once every five seconds. The central hands and hour index markers have all been coated with a Super-LumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility.
