Zenith Defy Extreme Desert Edition
The expression “snapshot in time” comes to mind as we contemplate the latest Zenith creation, since it stems from a collaboration with the acclaimed Californian-based nature photographer, Kourosh Keynejad. This new “Zenith Defy Extreme Desert Edition" is crafted out of titanium with pieces of a semi-precious stone known as falcon’s eye. Stone elements have been used on many watches before, but this may be the first time a natural stone has been used to form exterior case components. The 45mm case is of titanium with a vertically brushed finished and polished accents that provides a subtle contrast. Mounted to the case is a matching titanium bezel, while layered between that and the main case is an intermediate 12-sided bezel piece made of a falcon’s eye gemstone .On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Zenith’s large star logo is carved out in full display with purple jewels and several gears underneath. The unique limited edition “ONE OF 50” aspect has been inscribed in the titanium circumference. It comes equipped with two wide pushers to operate the chronograph functions, which are also framed by blocks of the falcon’s eye gemstone that serve as pusher protectors. These elements also double as crown guards for the screw-down crown rising from between their midst. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 200 meters (656 feet).Time is exhibited on a semi-transparent sapphire crystal dial with rhodium applied hour index markers, followed by a black ring with white printed minute markings. On the inner flange is a second grey ring with a white printed 100-scale that includes Arabic numerals for every 10-minute increment. There are three beige colored counters: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 60-minute counter at 6 o’clock, and sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock positions. On the upper-half of the dial a fourth beige semi-circle appears to frame the Zenith logo and a useful power reserve indicator. The beige aesthetics of this color-scheme can be enhanced by swapping out the integrated bracelet for the beige-colored rubber strap. And thanks to the quick strap-change mechanism the user can switch between straps and bracelet within seconds, without the need of any tools. The central rhodium-plated hands and hour index markers have all been coated with a beige Super-LumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility.
