Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 iN Stainless-Steel

First introduced in 1977 to commemorate the 222nd anniversary of Vacheron Constantin, the original 222 was a landmark in the evolution of luxury sports watches with integrated bracelets. Designed by Jorg Hysek, it joined the prestigious ranks of the Holy Trinity of sports watches, alongside the Royal Oak and Nautilus. Revered for its barrel-shaped case, notched bezel, and ultra-thin movement, the 222 has become a symbol of refined elegance and technical innovation.
In 2022, Vacheron Constantin reintroduced the 222 as a faithful re-edition in solid gold, captivating enthusiasts with its meticulous craftsmanship. Now, in celebration of the brand’s 270th anniversary, the iconic design is revisited once again, this time in stainless steel, offering collectors a modern take on a timeless classic.

The Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 in steel stays true to its iconic 1977 design with a stainless-steel case measuring 37mm in diameter and a slim profile of 7.95mm. This refined proportion remains faithful to the original “Jumbo” model, while the updated case construction now features a three-piece assembly, replacing the vintage monobloc design. Its brushed finish is accentuated by polished bevels, giving the watch a sophisticated, sporty elegance. The defining feature of the case is its notched bezel, an unconventional element that adds character and depth to the design. Sitting proudly at the 5 o’clock position is an 18k yellow gold Maltese cross, a hallmark of the 222 series and a nod to the brand’s emblem. The finishing is meticulous, with circular brushing on the bezel and vertical brushing on the case, showcasing Vacheron Constantin’s expertise in craftsmanship.
Topped with sapphire crystals on both the front and back, the watch offers a clear view of its modern movement while maintaining a water-resistance of 50 meters (165 feet), making it suitable for daily use. The push-pull crown integrates seamlessly into the case design, enhancing the watch’s clean and timeless aesthetic. The matte blue dial of the Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 in steel is a subtle nod to the original steel versions from 1977. Its elegant and understated tone has been slightly modernized, offering a more vibrant and saturated blue compared to its vintage predecessor. The dial layout retains the hallmark simplicity of the 222, with straight, faceted hour markers and baton-shaped hands that underscore its refined design language.

In keeping with its heritage, the applied Maltese cross at 12 o’clock and the historical logo bring a nostalgic touch to the dial. The 2-hand layout maintains the clean, minimalist style of the original, with a date window at 3 o’clock. Notably, the position of the date window has been adjusted inward, away from the outer minute track, to improve overall symmetry and enhance legibility.
Luminous functionality is discreet yet functional, with thin bands of off-white Super-LumiNova applied to the hour markers and hands. This ensures readability in low-light conditions without compromising the sleek aesthetic of the dial. The combination of modern updates and traditional elements creates a harmonious design true to the 222’s legacy.
