TAG Heuer Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph
The watch community was abuzz when TAG Heuer introduced the unique Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph for Only Watch in 2023, rekindling hopes for its addition to the permanent collection. This release marked TAG Heuer's renewed engagement with the rattrapante functionality, a complex mechanism rooted in their 1960s stopwatches but absent from their wristwatches until the quartz era. The introduction of the new calibre TH81-00 last year was a significant milestone, heralding TAG Heuer's comeback in the mechanical split-seconds chronograph arena.Unfortunately, the cancellation of the Only Watch charity auction last year caused disruptions across the industry. This event led to several unique concept watches, including the Monaco Split-Seconds, remaining unsold and overshadowed by newer models that were released and sold ahead of them, reflecting the unpredictable dynamics within the luxury watch market. This avant-garde chronograph features a 41mm square-shaped case, meticulously crafted from black DLC-coated titanium, and measures 15.2 mm in thickness. The attention to detail is evident in the case's finish, which includes brushing, sandblasting, and polishing to achieve a bold and sophisticated aesthetic.A polished sapphire bezel frames the domed sapphire crystal, ensuring clarity and visibility of the intricate features beneath.
On the flipside, the caseback is adorned with a beveled, polished, and screwed sapphire crystal, offering a panoramic view of the intricate calibre within. This design element not only showcases the advanced mechanics but also emphasizes the watch's commitment to modern aesthetics and functionality.
It comes equipped with a screw-in setting crown, decorated with a lacquered shield logo in red or blue, and two push-pieces that activate the split-seconds and standard chronograph functions. Despite the robust appearance of the case on paper, its actual size is moderated by its smart design, making it a balanced and wearable piece. All topped by a box-shaped sapphire crystal. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).
Time is exhibited on a transparent dial, where the interplay of colors and textures captivates the eye. Striking skeletonized central split-seconds and smaller chronograph counter hands are featured prominently, with the hands treated in red or blue to match the external accents. The square-based black opaline sub-dials at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions offer a subtle contrast with rounded corners and white markings.
The main dial is encircled by a round minutes track with crisp white printed markers and applied white and red hour indices, ensuring legibility and aesthetic appeal.
The rhodium-plated skeletonized hour and minute hands are treated with white Super-LumiNova and accented with vibrant tips, further enhancing visibility in varied lighting conditions. A discreet engraving of "Monaco" complements the dark grey surface above the polished logo centrally positioned above the midpoint.
