Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph 5980G

Earlier this year, Patek Philippe made headlines by announcing the discontinuation of several references for 2024, including the entire Nautilus 5980 collection. However, true to classic Patek style, they swiftly followed this decision with the introduction of a new model for one final celebration: the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5980/60G. This latest addition features a white gold flyback chronograph paired with a denim-style strap, offering a fresh take on the iconic timepiece. Originally launched in 1976, the Nautilus holds a revered place among the prestigious "holy trinity" of luxury sports watches. In 2006, marking the 30th anniversary of Gerald Genta's groundbreaking design for Patek Philippe, the Nautilus received an upgrade with the incorporation of an in-house chronograph complication. The 40.5mm and 12.2mm thick case is made of 18k white gold in its classic porthole-style design with a mix of vertically brushed surfaces and polished bevels finish. Mounted by an octagonal bezel, embraced by the signature ears which remain defining elements of this chronograph model. On the flip-side we have an exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases various gears, jewels, and a 21k yellow gold rotor, stamped by the Patek Philippe Seal. The most notable departure from the standard Nautilus case design is the incorporation of chronograph pushers positioned at 2 and 4 o’clock. The pusher positioned at 2 o’clock initiates and halts the chronograph, while its counterpart at 4 o’clock triggers the flyback function. With a broad and gently rounded shape, the polished oval pushers introduce a fresh element of brilliance to the already captivating case design, enhancing its visual appeal. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).Time is exhibited on a sunburst opaline blue-gray dial horizontally embossed with the traditional “garage door” motif of rectangular bars running across the dial in a leveled up & down configuration, followed by white gold applied hour markers with luminescent material. The central rounded baton hour and minute hands, along with hour index markers, have all been fitted with a luminescent filling for enhanced legibility.
Additionally, there is a framed date window at the 3 o’clock position and a large single counter with concentric scales for elapsed chronograph 12-hour and 60-minute times at 6 o'clock, snailed with white markings. Completing the ensemble is a white precision minutes/seconds track on the periphery.
