Panerai Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition

Officine Panerai recently established a new partnership with the German luxury brand BRABUS, known for crafting high-performance vehicles and power boats for the Marine division. Given the military origins of Panerai they seized the common naval theme of this joint venture to release the limited edition “Panerai Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition”. This is also their first skeletonized watch equipped with an automatic movement. The 47mm case is made of carbotech and took three years of development before reaching its final form. This proprietary alloy which debuted in 2015 is composed of thin sheets of carbon fibers compressed at a controlled temperature under high pressure together with a high-end polymer, PEEK (Polyether Ether Katone) that enhances its durability.Mounted to the case is an anti-clockwise rotating carbotech bezel with a graduated scale. This watch was mostly inspired by the Brabus Shadow Black Ops series of day-boats.On the flip-side is an exhibition case back, which allows us to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a useful power reserve indicator, among an array of several shiny jewels and moving gears in full display. It comes equipped with the iconic Panerai winding crown protection with the setting-crown nestled within, which also includes a lowering lever. All topped by a sapphire crystal that also assists with water-resistance reaching up to 300 meters (1,000 feet).Time is exhibited on a skeletonized dial with a mixture of round and rectangular hour index markers. It features a small seconds sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position that includes an AM/PM indicator, which supports the GMT hand by keeping track of home time. There is a date aperture highlighted by a red outline at the 3 o’clock position. The dial’s red details combined with the rest of the case’s dark gray color serve to mimic the characteristic BRABUS color palette of gunmetal gray, black and red. These splashes of red were used to accent the hour, minute, small seconds hands, plus the arrow-tip of the GMT hand.Due to the lack of surface provided by a traditional dial, Panerai has silk-screened the “Panerai Submersible” text directly onto the front sapphire crystal. The central skeletonized hands, hour index markers, plus the power-reserve indicator have all been fitted with a Super-LumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility.
