Oris Big Crown Calibre 473

A new year and a new caliber movement has been announced over at Oris. This novel piece of engineering is featured within the latest addition to the “Big Crown” collection. These ventures to innovate began with the cal. 400 series. The artisans in Hölstein have kept elevating their craftsmanship which has now led to a hand-wound movement contained within the brand new “Oris Big Crown Calibre 473”.  The 38 mm multi-piece case is made of stainless-steel with an overall brushed finish, while mounted to the case is a steel polished bezel. This case has managed to slim up thanks to the use of a hand-wound movement, but the full measurements weren’t mentioned in the press release. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback, which allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. In between several jewels and an exposed rotor is a five-day power reserve indicator. It comes equipped with its signature screw-in security “big crown”, embossed by the Oris logo. All topped by a domed sapphire crystal on both sides with an anti-reflective coating inside. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a blue dial with white painted Arabic numerals, followed by a white railroad motif minute index grid. Circling around the flange is a calendar ring, which is pointed out by a thin hand with a red arrow tip, efficiently highlighting it apart from all the other indications. There is also a small seconds with similar aesthetics, placed where the 6 o’clock numeral should have been.Instead of their vintage cathedral style central hands, this model appears with sword shaped hands. These central hands and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
