Omega Speedmaster Pilot Flight Qualified
There had already been a leak online based on an image captioned “Flight Qualified”. But, now the release is official as the “Omega Speedmaster Pilot Flight Qualified”. It is inspired by the Flightmaster, a watch originally launched in 1969 as a variant of the Speedmaster line, but engineered and targeted more towards pilots exclusively. The easily identifiable sections and an additional time zone, was a lure for people in aviation. This release offers a military inspired vintage watch, boosting a dial that manages to be dark and grained surface, yet with flickers of color and shapes in the form of vintage designed hands and markers.
The new Speedmaster Pilot features a brushed stainless steel case with a 40.85mm diameter and a thickness of 14.65mm. Its symmetrical design and fully brushed surfaces give it a distinctly utilitarian feel, aligning with its aviation-inspired theme. The fixed bezel, crafted from stainless steel, features a matte black aluminum insert with a tachymeter scale.
Flipping the watch over reveals a solid brushed steel screw-in caseback engraved with the Speedmaster’s iconic Seahorse medallion. While the movement remains hidden, the caseback maintains the robust and tool-like essence of the design. This sturdy construction underscores its suitability for professional use and adventurous settings.Notable details include vintage-inspired markers such as the “Dot Over Ninety” and orange accents that enhance its pilot aesthetic. It comes equipped with two piston-style pushers to operate the chronograph functions with a knurled setting-crown in-between them and embossed with the Omega logo. All topped by a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet). The dial of this Speedmaster Pilot is a striking combination of aviation-inspired details and practical readability. Its grained black surface, accented by a brushed metallic minute track, provides a textured and legible backdrop for the watch’s functions. The dial layout retains the classic two-register Speedmaster design with central hour, minute, and chronograph seconds hands, complemented by small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 60-minute and 12-hour combined chronograph counter at 3 o’clock.Drawing heavily from its pilot theme, the sub-dials feature distinctive designs. The 3 o’clock chronograph counter is styled to mimic a “burn rate” indicator, with a triangular matte orange hand and bold white numerals. At 9 o’clock, the small seconds sub-dial adopts a target or sight aesthetic, showcasing a matte yellow hand and a blue-and-white artificial horizon motif. The result is a visually dynamic dial that stands out from the more traditional Speedmaster designs. The applied Super-LumiNova hour markers and black PVD-coated hands filled with white Super-LumiNova ensure excellent visibility in low-light conditions. The central chronograph seconds hand, with its orange airplane-shaped tip, and the vivid sub-dial hands add playful yet functional touches to the utilitarian theme.
