Officine Panerai Submersible Bronzo Blu Abisso
The “Laboratorio di Idee” division of Panerai crafted a very elegant release for the Watches & Wonders event early this year, worthy of a callback. For those who like the 47mm bronze (PAM00671), but couldn’t handle the size, the new 42mm “Submersible Bronzo Blu Abisso” may be for you. “Abisso” is Italian for “abyss”, so it’s no wonder this watch garners such long stares. The 42mm case is made out of bronze with a brushed finish. To be more specific this bimetallic alloy consists of CuSn8, which is a solid solution of strengthened alloy (in other words bronze) with 8% tin. Many fans of bronze appreciate how it gains patina with age. As the years pile on a green or brown film will appear on the surface due to oxidation. On the flipside we encounter a contrasting titanium screwed on caseback, with a sapphire porthole that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement.Mounted to the case is a matching bronze unidirectional anti-clockwise rotating bezel with a graduated scale, plus those signature studs and dots. It comes equipped with the iconic Panerai patented safety lock crown guard and the wide protruding lugs, for a comfortable wrist fit. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 300 meters (960 feet), making it suitable for true divers.
Time is exhibited on a matte blue dial with bronze round hour index markers and rectangular round edged hour index markers for the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. There is a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position and a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position. Both the hour and minute hands, plus all the hour index markers have been fitted with a beige Super-LumiNova coating. This color choice pairs very well with the warm overtones of the blue dial and dark bronze case, but glows green in the dark, for that enhanced legibility.
