The IWC Portugieser 42 continues the legacy of one of IWC’s most iconic collections, offering a bold yet refined take on the classic Portugieser design. First introduced in 2000, this larger interpretation of the Portugieser stands out with its impressive dial layout and signature 7-day power reserve, making it a favorite among enthusiasts of traditional yet functional timepieces. With its latest update, the Portugieser 42 now comes in a luxurious red gold case paired with a timeless silver dial, embodying sophistication and enduring appeal.
Measuring 42.4mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness, the case of the IWC Portugieser 42 is crafted from polished 18k red gold, giving it an aura of understated luxury. The wide, flowing lugs maintain a proportional balance with the larger case size, ensuring it retains the elegant demeanor the Portugieser line is known for. A blend of brushed and polished surfaces adds depth to the case’s design, enhancing its visual appeal from all angles.
The caseback is fitted with a double box-shaped sapphire crystal, echoing the design of the front glass. This construction allows a clear view of the in-house Calibre 50211 movement, showcasing IWC’s commitment to horological artistry. The exhibition caseback is secured with screws, ensuring both durability and a seamless integration with the overall design.
Topped with a domed sapphire crystal featuring anti-reflective coating on both sides, the case also features a sizeable crown for easy operation. It offers adequate protection for daily use while retaining its focus on elegance and refinement. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).
The dial of the IWC Portugieser 42 is a masterclass in balanced design and functionality. Featuring a silver-toned, matte-finished surface, the expansive dial emphasizes clarity and elegance. The recessed small seconds and power reserve sub-dials are positioned symmetrically at 9 and 3 o’clock, creating a harmonious and highly legible layout. The inclusion of a date window at 6 o’clock further enhances the watch’s practicality without disrupting its clean aesthetic.
Gold-plated Arabic numerals and markers are meticulously applied, complementing the warmth of the red gold case. The “IWC Portugieser Automatic 42” (Ref#: IW501706) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 52011 with 31 jewels, 249 components, and 28,800 Vph. Power reserve can last up to 168 hours, when fully wound.
