IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph “U.S. Navy Squadron” Edition
Back in 2018 a partnership IWC Schaffhausen established gave them access to the entire U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation units, which led them to create several special editions made exclusively for present and former military members. Now for the first time IWC has released three of these U.S Navy squadron inspired timepieces, available for non-pilots.The 44.5mm case is made of black zirconium oxide ceramic for the “Tophatters” and “Royal Maces”, while the “Blue Angels” model comes in a fitting bright blue ceramic casing. All these pilot's watches feature a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. In common with one another on the flip-side is a solid grade 5 titanium caseback that has been engraved by each model's squadron patch, as you can see below.
They also all come equipped with two push-pieces to operate the chronograph and stop-watch features; with a screw-in crown adorned by the IWC logo in-between them. The pushers and crown on all three of these models are made of Ceratanium, which is a patented IWC alloy made by a combination of titanium and ceramic. It manages to provide the lightweight and unbreakable qualities of titanium, plus the scratch-resistant qualities of ceramic. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The glass has been secured against displacement by drop in air pressure. Water-resistance on these watches can reach up to 60 meters (196 feet). Time is exhibited on either a black or blue dial with white Arabic numerals, followed by a ring of index markers and the iconic IWC aviation triangle between two dots at the 12 o’clock position. Each model includes its own particular color accents, adding an extra touch to their overall palette. There are three snailed sub-dials: a small hacking seconds at the 6 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position. Each model has included its distinctive squadron badge (as seen on their casebacks) inside the hacking seconds sub-dial.They also include a two-window day/date aperture aligned with the 3 o’clock position, placed between the IWC Schaffhausen logo inscriptions. The central hands, Arabic numerals and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
